What is this book about? In the introduction the editors answer the question as follows:

This book is an attempt to look in more depth at some women academics’ experiences of being in a “man centred university?” during the post‐war period in Britian, compared and contrasted with some women’s experiences in higher education in other countries of Europe and the USA. We wanted both to document and illustrate some of the changing patterns of women’s lives in higher education during this time. Thus we have carefully selected women whose lives span the generations of women in academia in the post‐war period.

The book is in three parts:

  • Part one looks at four women from abroad ‐ the countries of Norway, Germany, USA and Greece.

  • Part two deals with “the generation of women who forged the way in Britain for their successors, exemplified by six very diverse and yet challenging accounts of doughty role models”.

  • Part three deals with “Six women who are pursuing their careers in universities with a varied mix of humour and resignation at the end of the twentieth century”.

The accounts in this book illustrate the changing cultural, socio‐economic and educational scene and how these changes have been experienced in higher education. This is a stimulating and interesting book addressing a topical and challenging issue in higher eduation today and for the future.
