Context

The provision and successful operation of venues within a city or destination will often dictate the future development of many aspects of the location’s hospitality, tourism, festival and event offering. Venues as diverse as hotels, visitor attractions, conference centres, sports stadia, unusual venues, open spaces and restaurants may act as the draw to place an event within a destination, while the lack of specific facilities may inhibit business development. The role of the public and private stakeholders in working within set event and economic development policies therefore becomes critical in realizing planned development targets and aspirations.

In spite of the importance of venues as host locations, little has been written in the academic literature that focuses on the venues themselves; the specific operational issues that they encounter; their role within destination development and as the interface between the multi-faceted hospitality, tourism, leisure and sports sectors. Therefore, the Guest Editors consider that there is considerable opportunity for the exploration of management themes that can contribute to the body of knowledge in relation to the successful management of event and festival venues. It is with this thought that the following special edition is instigated with the aim of contributing to and developing the discussion and academic literature on this vital sector.

Theme

The theme identified is that of Events Venue Development and Management. Suitable topics for the special issue include, but are not limited to, the following sub-themes:

  Venue provision. Historical, current and future developments internationally, their role within a destination context, emerging event destinations, public policy and governance.

• •

  Venues as the interface between hospitality, tourism, sport and leisure services.

• •

  Venue stakeholders. Stakeholder management, public sector, private sector engagement, partnerships, local community, delegates and attendees.

• •

  Venue management. Operations, finance, feasibility, security.

• •

  Venue sustainability. Economic, social and environmental sustainability.

• •

  Venue marketing. Marketing and promotional strategies, collaboration, convention bureau, place marketing.

Expressions of interest – May 2010.

Deadline for paper submission – August 2010.

Feedback on paper – December 2010.

Final manuscript submission – February 2011.

Publication (estimate) – May 2011.

Submissions

Submissions from both academics and practitioners are now invited for this special edition of the International Journal of Event and Festival Management. Those who wish to contribute to the Special Issue are encouraged to express their interest and submit full papers as per the timeframe indicated above. Full papers will be double blind reviewed.
