Owners of a food business must have registered their premises with the local authority by 1 May 1992. It will be an offence to operate a food business from unregistered premises from this date. Forms for registration are available from environmental health departments. The purpose of registration is to provide local authorities which are responsible for food legislation with information about the food business in their area, so they can plan their inspections and use their resources more effectively.
