Abstract

Six billion cans of food were used in the UK last year. This represents 300 cans for every British household, or an average consumption of six cans each week for every family, or almost one can opened for every two main meals prepared. Yet, surprisingly, we are eating 16% less canned food than we did ten years ago, although our pets are eating 25% more. Metal Box Limited has recently announced new plans to halt the declining popularity of canned foods intended for human consumption.
