Abstract

The glasshouse industry of Britain occupies a mere 0.05% of the total area of land under crops other than grass. On this basis it would seem disproportionate to devote the activities of a national research institute to this small area. The Glasshouse Crops Research Institute is, however, serving an economically extremely important sector of horticulture. The total annual value of crops grown under glass is approximately £60 million and the Institute also serves the needs of the mushroom industry valued at £16 million.
