LOOKING TO THE USA FOR A NEW PRECEDENT
Abstract
The Years of the Great Depression had been characterised by individual countries devaluing their currencies in the foreign exchange market. The rationale behind their thinking was that if other countries did not devalue, then the country which did would gain a competitive advantage for two reasons: first exports would be increased because they would be cheaper, and secondly consumers would switch spending to domestically‐produced goods.
