Abstract

Figuratively speaking Singapore's philosopher‐statesman, Premier Lee Kuan Yew, stood at the window and looked at the future through a telescope. Spurred on by what he saw, the leaders of that dynamic country launched an experiment aimed at re‐structuring the economy to face the challenge of the post‐industrial society. No other nation has planned ahead in this manner; and everyone, not least the British, can learn from the Singaporeans. First, however, some socio‐economic information relating to Singapore merits consideration.
