Abstract

No call for further education Manchester fur manufacturer Michael Edelson offered school leavers the opportunity to earn 28 a week while training in the fur trade at his factory, only to find that of the six applicants for his eight‐week training course only one turned up for interview. The courses have been running successfully for the past three years, training students in all aspects of machining fur. Experienced machinists are difficult to find as there is no official training scheme in operation in the country, so they have to train their own. At the end of the course, provided they show a certain amount of aptitude, they are offered a job. 17 of the ex‐trainees are now in employment with other furriers, and five work at the Edelson factory.
