Abstract

Retailer and banker have a common interest in satisfying their mutual customers, reflected in the English and Scottish Clearing Bankers' and the Retail Consortium's joint support of the EFT‐POS system. Within the UK several EFT‐POS experiments are either operational or planned, in particular in Aberdeen and Glasgow where Clydesdale, Midland and Northern Bank ATM and Access Cards are being used at a limited number of outlets. Retailers and bankers are in agreement in the broad framework, wanting the system to be easy to operate, flexible, security conscious and accepting a wide range of cards. A banks'/retailers' joint steering committee has been set up and a cost/benefit analysis at industry level has been commissioned.
