Abstract

Like most other parts of the country today, Coventry is in recession and unfortunately there are few signs of this recession lifting in the near future, affected as it is by a static world demand which is beset by the limitations of continuing inflation which, while brought partially under control in the last year or so, now shows every sign of increasing again throughout the western world. It is against this background that I shall talk about the balance of power, and indeed the abuse of power, for I have always believed that expansion of the economy is a necessary catalyst for responsible behaviour and good industrial relations. When recession exists, with its consequential unemployment, factory closures, lack of opportunity and individual frustration it is the worst time for mutual belief in success and a most difficult time for management to achieve the essential productivity, efficiency and competitiveness.
