Highlights the criticisms that have been made of coaching and mentoring as training and employee development tools. Discusses the difficulties that can be encountered – internal coaching initiatives need an internal coaching culture if they are to succeed, whilst it can be difficult to find a good supplier of external coaching. Indicates how internal and external coaching can be managed effectively, underlining the need to evaluate these programme properly.
