Article Type: Abstracts From: Development and Learning in Organizations, Volume 24, Issue 6

Hines P.Training Journal, June 2010, Start page: 28, No. of pages: 5

In the first article of a two-part series, discusses the need for organizations that want to adopt lean production processes to develop a lean culture and discusses how this can be done. Presents the Lean Sustainability Iceberg Model, which differentiates between the factors that are below the waterline and which are the enablers – strategy and alignment, leadership, and behaviour and engagement; and the factors that are above the waterline and which are visible – technology, tools and technologies, and process management. Describes how this model was used at Cogent Power, an electrical steel manufacturer that has plants in the UK, Sweden and Canada that function as semi-autonomous business units, to develop a culture that support lean production processes.
