Describes the construction of the Living Learning Center (LLC), part of the Tyson Research Center of Washington University in St Louis (WUSTL), Missouri, as a “green” building designed to minimize its impact on the environment by using energy, water, and other resources more efficiently. Reports that the LLC aims to receive a “living building” certification from the Cascadia Region Green Building Council’s (CRGBC) Living Building Challenge, through the use of some of the most rigorous green and sustainable standards for the construction industry. Notes that the CRGBC plays an important role in the work of the US Green Building Council, the organization that developed Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the internationally recognized green building certification standards. Pays particular attention to LLC’s toilets, part of a composting toilet system, which provides a waterless, natural, and sustainable alternative to what is commonly used in buildings and homes.Article type: ViewpointISSN: 1542-894XReference: 39AC202
