Purpose – Advises trainers on how to engage and involve their audience in the training that they are delivering. Design/methodology/approach – Describes the stages in group development (forming, storming, norming and performing) and applies it to the delivery of a training programme. Adds a final stage - adjourning - and discusses the activities undertaken during this part of the session. Findings – Underlines the need for groups of trainees to come together properly as a group before that can engage in training. Practical implications – Offers practical advice on using a group development model to inform training design. Originality/value – Discusses the group dynamics that can make or break training.
