As I begin my sixth year as editor, it is gratifying to note the progress we have made over the last few years. In 2008, we submitted our application to Thomson Reuters for CDI to be recognized as an ISI journal. In 2010, we received that recognition with the journal being indexed and abstracted in Social Sciences Citation Index(c), Journal Citation Reports/Social Sciences Edition and Current Contents(c)/Social and Behavioural Sciences. And, in September 2012, as anticipated, we received our first impact factor of 1.014. This impact factor of 1.014 compares favorably with that of many well-known journals in the fields of management and psychology.

The impact factor along with the “EarlyCite” functionality offered through the ScholarOne’s Manuscript Central system positions CDI quite well to grow in both reputation and prestige. Our request to the Association of Business Schools (ABS) to assign CDI a higher grade is still under consideration. Such a reassignment will tremendously benefit the journal and our European colleagues, authors, and reviewers.

I would like to thank CDI’s editorial advisory board members, authors and the hundreds of reviewers for contributing their time and talent to the journal. CDI’s associate editors, Tom Stone (Oklahoma State University, USA), Nikos Bozionelos (Durham University, UK), Julia Richardson (York University, Canada), and Bert Schreurs (Maastricht University, The Netherlands) deserve special mention for their dedication to providing high-quality and constructive feedback to potential contributors. The editorial team greatly appreciates the support of Nancy Rolph, Kim Eggleton and staff of the Emerald Publishing Group.

The scope of CDI encompasses mainstream career research as well as research addressing topics in the broad areas of human resource management and organizational behavior that have implications for careers and managing careers. CDI publishes theoretical papers, review articles offering new insights and research directions, qualitative and quantitative studies, and special issues on topics dealing with important issues, concerns and emerging trends. Acceptance decisions are based solely on the merits of the manuscript and no preference is given to one topic or methodology or level of analysis over another. We intend to continue publishing special issues on topics dealing with important issues, concerns and emerging trends. Readers and prospective authors are encouraged to contact us with their ideas for special issues. Potential authors are encouraged to visit the journal’s homepage to peruse previous issues of the journal and learn about the submission process.

I am pleased to report that during my tenure as editor, the number of submissions has increased and the acceptance rate decreased. These changes have resulted in publication of high quality articles; and, we fully expect this positive trend to continue into the future. CDI is now a serious scholarly journal as evidenced by the impact factor, the quality of manuscripts published, and the reputation of well-known scholars who routinely consider CDI as a potential outlet for their research.

Leading a journal is a collective effort and I am thankful to all who impact the journal from authors to reviewers to readers. I am confident you will enjoy reading our first issue of 2013, a special issue on self-initiated expatriates. I know that CDI will have another great year!
