New certification for performance-improvement experts

New certification for performance-improvement experts

The International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) and the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) certification institute have affiliated in the certified performance technologist (CPT) certification programme, offering members of both organisations and others in the profession, a new way to prove their value and gain recognition of their professional expertise.

Developed by ISPI, the CPT certification was created in response to requests from public and private organisations for criteria to distinguish proficient practitioners of human-performance technology. The certification requires three years of experience in performance-improvement work, demonstration of proficiency in ten standards, commitment to the code of ethics and re-certification every three years.

Developed by a team of more than 30 performance-improvement specialists led by the former ISPI president, Dr Judith Hale, the CPT designation is given to individuals who satisfy a set of requirements. Proficiency in the ten performance-technology standards is assessed through a combination of descriptions of previous work, attestations by clients or employers and a review of documents by qualified reviewers. The certification is performance based and not tied to specific education requirements.

"The development of the certified performance technologist standards and designation is a significant achievement for the field of performance improvement", commented Richard Battaglia, ISPI executive director chief executive. "This designation will help to differentiate experienced performance-improvement specialists to their clients or employers. Our affiliation with ASTD ensures that there is one set of standards and one designation for the profession and will dramatically increase the awareness of the CPT."

Tina Sung, ASTD president and chief executive, said: "By pooling the resources of the ISPI and ASTD, this certification helps members of both organisations to demonstrate their professional capabilities and expertise to their employer or clients."

People, with at least six years of experience may apply for the certification under a streamlined process until 31 October 2003.
