The Clinton administration has proposed a budget of $154.5 million for federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funding in FY2000. This is $12 million less than the $166 million allocated for libraries in FY99. The Institute of Museum and Library Services administers the LSTA funds.

DeKalb County, Georgia, restored library funding after a county budget imbroglio forced closing of some library branches and reduced hours in others. County commissioners approved a $354.7 million budget, which restored most of the funds that were cut. The budget not only restored hours at three branches, but also made it possible to fill ten open library positions that had been frozen.

Calabasa Public Library (CPL), California, having withdrawn from the County of Los Angeles Public Library System opened a new library in City Hall with a new collection if 14,000 titles purchased with $225,000 in city-authorized funds. The library now managed by Library Systems and Services, Inc. (LSSI) declined to buy its 17,000-item collection from the county of Los Angeles System.
