Corrintec celebrates 40th anniversary

Keywords: Corrintec, Cathodic protection, Corrosion prevention

One of the best known companies in the British cathodic protection market is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2002.

Corrintec, now a division of the Cathelco Group, was the brainchild of John Morgan, an expert in corrosion theory and the author of Corrosion Protection which became a standard reference source within the industry.

Originally called Morgan Marine Ltd, the company was renamed Morgan Berkeley and Co. Ltd in the 1960s when Ken Berkeley, an industrial corrosion specialist became a Director. Since then it has continued to expand into the marine and industrial corrosion protection sectors.

In 1995, Corrintec Ltd, then based in Winchester, was acquired by the Cathelco Group, a major company in marine pipework anti-fouling systems whose interests also covered ICCP systems for hull corrosion protection and offshore platform applications. These interests were extended in 1998 when Corrintec bought out WSL, principally known as manufacturers of the Marion portable ICCP system.

A year ago, Corrintec’s design and manufacturing facilities were transferred to Chesterfield, where the Cathelco Group is based. This provided the opportunity to strengthen the management and expand an already strong technical team (Plate 1).

“We now have a team of specialists focusing on each of our market sectors, providing an unusual depth of expertise in specific fields. Together, this provides us with an exceptional overall capability in corrosion protection and subsea survey work”, said Andy Devereux, Operations Director.

Corrintec has always been recognised for the calibre of its technical personnel. Dave Moran, Senior Technical Manager, who is a professional member of the Institute of Corrosion, lectures internationally on the subject of marine corrosion. He is supported by Steve Ellis, Technical Manager (a professional member of NACE) and Rahul Panchal, Design Engineer, who holds a B.Sc. in Metallurgy and M.Sc. in Manufacturing and Engineering Management.

Subsea pipeline corrosion protection surveys are one of Corrintec’s specialities. Over the last decade, more than 20,000 km of pipeline have been surveyed, in areas as far apart as the Indian Ocean and the waters off Tierra del Feugo.

The Subsea Survey Division, led by Engineering Manager Andy Taylor, has recently mobilised in the sea of Japan to carry out a 39 km rig to shore survey commissioned by SNK Ocean on behalf of Iwaki Petroleum Co. Ltd. Another major project in the Gulf of Mexico is to be announced shortly.

In the Marine Division the main thrust has been on developing a range of specialised ICCP systems providing corrosion protection for steel and aluminium hulled craft as well as the new generation of watejet propelled fast ferries.

Corrintec are also very active in the renewal and maintenance of cathodic protection schemes for land based structures, water mains and pipelines. They have completed a number of jetty protection projects at ports around the UK and have on-going contracts with a number of Water Authorities.
