Denso Tape protects Tilbury deep water berth tie rods

Keywords Winn & Coales (Denso), Corrosion prevention, Marine environment

Normanby Industries Ltd of Scunthorpe has won a contract from Amec Marine on behalf of Container Services Ltd to supply tie rods, eye couplers and turnbuckles for use in the construction of a deep water berth at Tilbury Docks. An existing berth is being deepened to accommodate the largest container ships.

The work involves 212 40m x 100mm tie rods, 212 eye couplers and 636 turnbuckles. To give long term protection under Thames estuary water, Normanby Industries is wrapping the tie rods with Winn & Coales' Denso Tape, followed by Denso PVC self-adhesive tape. The eye couplers and turnbuckles are protected with Densyl Mastic to soften the contours of the joints, followed by Denso Tape overwrapped with Denso PVC self-adhesive tape. The tapes are being applied mechanically using a Denso Wrapping Machine.

Denso Tape is a non-woven synthetic fibre fabric impregnated and coated with an adhesive compound based on petrolatum.
