Coventry-based Advanced Surface Treatments (AST) Ltd has helped a budding young French chemist gain top marks in her final diploma project.

Valérie Coiffier, 20, has spent three months working with AST at its base on the Alpha Business Park in Coventry as part of her two-year undergraduate course in chemistry with the Institut Universitaire de Technologie in BesÀnµon, France.

Her work has included analysis and development of recently introduced high zinc nickel alloy processes - the latest in a range of high corrosion-resistant technologies being offered by the company primarily to the automotive and aerospace industries.

It is work that has helped her to gain top marks amongst her 12-strong year group. AST marketing manager, Lew Lindsey, said: "Valérie has proved a very capable chemist and has done some great work in our laboratories. We are delighted that we have been able to help her in her studies and in her eventual career".

Valérie, who hopes to go on to a career in textile engineering, said: "It has been a great experience working in a commercial environment which is introducing new technologies all the time. I have gained a great deal from my time here".

Its training scheme for its own staff was recognised when the company won the industry's prestigious Surface Engineering Association 1999 training award.

AST has also been appointed a host company under the Government's Inside UK Enterprise scheme to pass on its expertise in identifying and adopting best practices for competitive success to related industries.
