Two new flux cored wires from Metrode Products Ltd, Supercore 308H and Supercore 16.8.2, are reported to match the high creep rupture strength, high temperature scaling resistance and corrosion resistance of type "300H" austenitic stainless steels. These are commonly used for high temperature process plant in the petrochemical, refinery and power generation industries.

Metrode informs us that development of Supercore 308H and Supercore 16.8.2 has been determined by the consumable and process preferences of major refinery operators. These contractors are seeking a cost-effective, high-productivity alternative to more conventional welding processes, particularly for refurbishment of plant constructed with type 304H during shutdowns. Hot tensile ductility and stress-rupture ductility are of particular importance within the "300H" range of stainless steels, where compositional variations provide differing combinations of hot tensile strength, long term metallurgical stability and creep performance.

The company also states that bismuth traditionally added to flux cored wires to assist with slag-release and improve weld bead appearance, is now known to affect the hot ductility of FCW weld metals, causing inter granular cracks to occur after a short service above 700°C. Metrode's new 308H and 16.8.2 flux cored wire compositions contain no bismuth. It is reported that test data and experience have shown that they can be used with confidence in the cost-effective fabrication and repair of high temperature plant as high productivity alternatives to more conventional welding processes.
