ARCNET fibre-optic interface

ARCNET fibre-optic interface

Keywords Fieldbus, Fibre optic

Harting has developed a fibre-optic interface for use in industrial automation systems based on the ARCNET local area-network standard. The interface converts electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa for point-topoint links (see Plate 6).

The use of fibre-optic cables instead of standard coaxial cable results in connections which are immune to RFI/EMI noise, allowing secure data transfer over long distances. It also ensures electrical isolation between transmitter and receiver.

For the ARCNET fibre-optic interface, the electrical signals are transferred through a BNC connector, and the optical inputs and outputs are available via F-SMA or FHST-style ports. Both star and bus network configurations can be equipped with these interfaces.

The signal format and data rate confirm to the ARCNET standard at 2.5Mbit/s. A transmission distance of up to 2km is possible.
