Social innovation and the sustainable development

Article Type: Editorial From: International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education, Volume 16, Issue 4

Welcome to a further issue of International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education. We are pleased to present in this issue a further set of papers on sustainability at higher education institutions from various universities and research groups. In this editorial, I would like to address the issue of social innovation and sustainability.

The links between social innovation and the sustainable development agenda and policies are very apparent, in particular when once considers social and equity issues. A report produced by the European Sustainable Development Network (ESDN), titled “Social Innovation in Europe: An overview of the concept of social innovation in the context of European initiatives and practices” written by Umberto Pisano, Lisa Lange and Gerald Berger, looks at the concept of social innovation and the role of social entrepreneurship in the social innovation discourse.

The report provides an outlook on the various policy activities that are happening in the European Union (EU) and describes three practical experiences of social innovation that demonstrate what social innovation is all about. The report helps to understand and showcase some of the main initiatives and activities undertaken at the EU level, and it presents several examples that help to understand how social innovation works in practice. The document concludes by offering several considerations that can guide the reader in reflecting deeper on the topic. It is an useful source of information and is available at: http://www.sd-network.eu/?k=quarterly%20reports
