Abstract

Relying on a sample survey, seeks to establish what progress has been made in changing employment policies, practices and procedures in the engineering industry in Northern Ireland since the possibility of new fair employment legislation was mooted in the late 1980s. Finds that, while most employers have made real progress, others show little substantial change in their approach. However, while in general the new law is being taken very seriously, for reasons which may often lie beyond the control of employers, it could be some time before it makes a significant impact on the employment differential between Protestants and Roman Catholics in the industry.
