About the Author

Following a career in child and family social work and service development, Jim took up a post as a Lecturer in Social Work at Teesside University where his role included collaboration with UNICEF in central Asia. He moved to Huddersfield in 2008 to teach on childhood studies programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His PhD on primary teachers’ experiences and understanding of care is a critical interpretation of mediating power in directing teachers’ work. He has published extensively on child protection and safeguarding, the theoretical and practical underpinnings of education research and the challenges of the employability agenda. He has recently begun research into the application of the Finnish ‘baby box’ in Britain, with a particular interest in materiality and relational aspects of the box.
