Abstract

In this paper, we study technology innovation as a concept. We classify technology innovation into multiple categories, explore the antecedents to technology – those factors in the organizations/environment that cause/facilitate technology innovation (market structure, firm organisation, functional market, vertical integration, national innovation system, and IPR protection); and the consequences of technology innovation on firms and markets (firm strategy, market evolution, risks, socio‐cultural evolution, and firm restructuring). On the basis of these antecedents and consequences, we develop a framework for understanding technology innovation as a concept. We subsequently evolve a process of managing technology innovation. In each of these sections, we develop a few propositions based on the literature of these topics for further research.
