Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this article is to show how members of an organization can be encouraged to participate actively in information exchange and in the creation of an organizational knowledge base.

Design/methodology/approach

This article addresses this issue by providing recommendations from motivational and social psychology.

Findings

The article provides recommendations concerning people's need for self‐determination, for social relations, regarding their reputation, and their need for favorable self‐presentation.

Originality/value

The recommendations from motivational and social psychology are supposed help organizations to support participation in organizational information exchange.
