Abstract

Reports from the ISATA conference on new manufacturing processes which are affecting car assembly techniques. Outlines how hydroforming reduces weight and eliminates welding processes. Describes the latest developments in laser welding carried out by Volvo, Mercedes‐Benz and BMW. Reviews a self‐piercing fastening system which is adapted to the new aluminium and lightweight steels now being introduced in car design.
