A number of new concepts about leadership are described, together with a new approach to improving organisational performance through the creation of a New Leadership Initiative. It is argued that effective leadership is the key to improving organisational performance, and the limitations that traditional leadership imposes on the achievement of this improvement is examined. A new definition of leadership is provided which details the key attributes that leaders must develop. Organisation‐wide strategies used in a number of different organisations in the private and public sector during the last five years are looked at.
