Abstract

In this chapter, we draw upon data from a six-month study that took place in a progressive, multiage preschool classroom in the northeast United States. Our study focus was on the relationship between young children, gender, and curriculum. Using posthumanist concepts, we focus on how space and materials are actors who can aid in the production of gender in an early childhood classroom. Understanding place as assemblage, we draw upon political theorist Jane Bennett’s concepts of assemblage and thing power, as we map forces and actors in the preschool classroom: “loose parts” (a curated “natural” wooded, outdoor space) and “inner treetop” (the inside classroom space). Our findings show that gender emerges in different areas in preschool classrooms. We conclude with discussions of how separate and distinct possibilities and performances of gender configure into issues of equity and early childhood learning.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a discrete element (DE) and multiscale modeling methodology to represent granular media at their particle scale as they interface solid deformable bodies, such as soil‐tool, tire, penetrometer, pile, etc., interfaces.

Design/methodology/approach

A three‐dimensional ellipsoidal discrete element method (DEM) is developed to more physically represent particle shape in granular media while retaining the efficiency of smooth contact interface conditions for computation. DE coupling to finite element (FE) facets is presented to demonstrate initially the development of overlapping bridging scale methods for concurrent multiscale modeling of granular media.

Findings

A closed‐form solution of ellipsoidal particle contact resolution and stiffness is presented and demonstrated for two particle, and many particle contact simulations, during gravity deposition, and quasi‐static oedometer, triaxial compression, and pile penetration. The DE‐FE facet coupling demonstrates the potential to alleviate artificial boundary effects in the shear deformation region between DEM granular media and deformable solid bodies.

Research limitations/implications

The research is being extended to couple more robustly the ellipsoidal DEM code and a higher order continuum FE code via overlapping bridging scale methods, in order to remove dependence of penetration/shear resistance on the boundary placement for DE simulation.

Practical implications

When concurrent multiscale computational modeling of interface conditions between deformable solid bodies and granular materials reaches maturity, modelers will be able to simulate the mechanical behavior accounting for physical particle sizes and flow in the interface region, and thus design their tool, tire, penetrometer, or pile accordingly.

Originality/value

A closed‐form solution for ellipsoidal particle contact is demonstrated in this paper, and the ability to couple DE to FE facets.

Abstract

Purpose

The affectivity is conceptualised in the literary work of phenomenological theories as a significant factor in urban environments studies that are related to change people's feelings. This article aims to present toolkits for creating affective urban atmospheres, which is based on communications between people and place.

Design/methodology/approach

To better comprehend the links between the felt body theory and reconstructing affective urban atmospheres in urban environments, this article has performed bibliographic investigations on the sensible approaches and presented Toolkit related to the multi-sensory experience.

Findings

This article breaks new ground to discuss the concepts of the felt body, vital drive and daily multi-sensory experience as a contribution to urban studies applications.

Research limitations/implications

This article clarified the possibility of creating affective urban atmospheres through the concepts of affectivity as a process at a pre-design stage.

Originality/value

In conclusion, it is argued that work on multi-sensory experience in urban environments needs to address the felt body and vital drive to become a set of urban studies tools of perceptual dimension.

The finishes used on the bodywork of motor‐cars must provide adequate protection against corrosion, effective over a period of many years, under various climatic, atmospheric and operational conditions. Lasting, attractive appearance is also an important requirement of these finishes. The treatment of steel prior to painting, and the electroplated bright finishes are briefly described. The first article in this series, ‘Corrosive Wear of Piston Rings and Cylinders,’ appeared last August and the second, ‘The Cooling System,’ appeared in the November issue of Corrosion Technology. A further article will deal with ‘Corrosion of Components, etc’.

Abstract

Prenatal comes from the Latin words ‘prae’ and ‘natalis’ meaning ‘before’ and ‘to be born’, respectively (Concise Oxford Dictionary, 1995). This word is semiotically loaded because ‘prenatal’ connotes the time before being born. The word itself signifies the foetus (who is ‘before being born’) not the pregnant body within whom the foetus grows. If medical experts working within the discipline of reproductive medicine concentrate more on the foetus and its health than the pregnant woman, they take this meaning to heart. Experts argue that ‘a multidisciplinary approach to the foetus is essential part of antenatal screening’ (Malone, 1996, p. 157), a view suggesting that the foetus, more than a pregnant woman, is the physician's main focus during the prenatal period.

What proof have the public, independent of the assertions of the makers, that all the firms whose products are sold indifferently by the shopkeepers use only the best materials; or, indeed, that a large number of the articles sold are not mixtures more or less objectionable or fraudulent ? This, in effect, is the question put by a writer in a West of England newspaper, and it might be used as a text upon which to write a lengthy homily on the adulteration question and on the astonishing gullibility of the public. As a matter of fact the only evidence of the character and quality of food and other products, in regard to which there is no independent guarantee, is that which is afforded by the standing of the makers, and to some extent of the firms which offer them for sale. And this evidence cannot, under any circumstances, be looked upon as constituting proof. The startling allegations so commonly put forward by advertisers with respect to their wares, while they may be ineffective in so far as thinking people are concerned, must nevertheless be found pecuniarily advantageous since the expense involved in placing them under the eyes of the public would otherwise hardly be incurred. Many of these advertised allegations are, of course, entirely unjustifiable, or are incapable of proof. It may be hoped that the lavish manner in which they are set out, and their very extravagance, may, in time, result in producing a general effect not contemplated by the advertisers. In the meantime it cannot be too often pointed out that proof, such as that which is required for the satisfaction of the retailer and for the protection of the public, can only be obtained by the exercise of an independent control, and, in certain cases, by the maintenance of efficient independent inspection in addition, so that a guarantee of a character entirely different to that which may be offered, even by a firm of the highest eminence, may be supplied.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to analyse 3D growing concrete structures taking into account the phenomenon of body accretion, necessary for the simulation of the construction sequence, and carbon dioxide attack.

Design/methodology/approach

A typical 3D segmental bridge made of precast concrete is studied through a fully coupled thermo‐hygro‐mechanical F.E. model. The durability of the bridge is evaluated and carbonation effects are considered. Creep, relaxation and shrinkage effects are included according to the theory developed in the 1970s by Bažant for concretes and geomaterials; the fluid phases are considered as a unique mixture which interacts with a solid phase. The porous material is modelled using n Maxwell elements in parallel (Maxwell‐chain model).

Findings

First, calibration analyses are developed to check the VISCO3D model capabilities for predicting carbonation phenomena within concrete and the full 3D structure is modelled to further assess the durability of the bridge under severe conditions of CO2 attack.

Originality/value

The adopted numerical model accounts for the strong coupling mechanisms of CO2 diffusion in the gas phase, moisture and heat transfer, CaCO3 formation and the availability of Ca(OH)2 in the pore solution due to its transport by water movement. Additionally, the phenomenon of a sequential construction is studied and numerically reproduced by a sequence of “births” for the 3D finite elements discretizing the bridge. The fully coupled model is here extended to 3D problems for accreting bodies (as segmental bridges) in order to gather the effects of multi‐dimensional attacks of carbon dioxide for such structures.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to measure incompatibilities between the manufacturing approaches (MA) used by the manufacturing industries, and those used for the off-site construction (OSC) of buildings. The aim is to explore which of these approaches could be integrated into OSC in a precise manner as viewed by architects as well as how this might occur.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical research and empirical cycle (EC) was adopted as a methodological framework to measure incompatibilities. A combination of quantitative and qualitative mixed methods was explored through a literature-based case study of prefabricated houses and cars, nine real-life projects built by the second author's research team and the first-named author's practical experiences of leading these projects, based on a logic framework derived from the authors’ reflections of their architectural practices.

Findings

The findings quantitatively present the incompatibilities between cars (automobile bodies) and prefabricated houses. Design-related aspects have the most potential for integration (42.3% increment). The key lessons were identified as specific design philosophies and related guidelines for architects.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are limited to single types of products (cars) and buildings (prefabricated houses) in particular regions. The key lessons just present a preliminary evaluation of the application of the design philosophies and related guidelines in nine real-life projects to comply with word limit constraints.

Practical implications

This study could help architects and other practitioners to locate and target and alleviated incompatibilities between MA and OSC. It could also precisely identify integration shortcomings to optimize decision-making as well as technical pathways for possible and effective breakthroughs.

Social implications

This study provides fundamental research as a starting point for further discussion and development. A series of additional in-depth investigations combined with case studies are planned for the future. These could provide alternative study approaches to develop more appropriate architectural design methodologies and more streamlined processes.

Originality/value

The research contributes an alternative architectural perspective when measuring incompatibilities between MA and OSC. The results highlight the implications of precise measurement and provide guidance for architects. These facilitate the effective and successful integration of MA into OSC of buildings and promote the uptake of lean construction (LC) in OSC.
