Abstract

Purpose

The affordable loss (AL) heuristic, as one crucial sub-dimension of effectuation, delineates the maximum level of investment entrepreneurs are ready to lose in a worst-case scenario. Conflicting conceptualizations remain regarding whether entrepreneurs’ psychological traits matter for AL. Based on the narcissistic admiration and narcissistic rivalry perspective, this study investigates the relationship between chief executive officer (CEO) narcissism and AL behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

Using data collected from the CEOs and paired vice presidents at 122 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in mainland China, the authors intend to further explore the association between psychological traits, especially CEO narcissism and AL behaviors under environment and resource constraints (e.g. perceived uncertainty and slack resources).

Findings

The findings show that CEO admiration-based narcissism is positively related to AL behaviors in the firm. Furthermore, when firms hold more slack resources, narcissistic admiration has a stronger positive association with AL; while when the environment becomes more uncertain, narcissistic admiration has a weaker positive association with AL. In contrast, CEO rivalry-based narcissism is negatively related to AL behaviors in the firm. When the environment becomes more uncertain, narcissistic rivalry has a stronger negative association with AL.

Originality/value

This article contributes to trait-based effectuation research and suggests that individual psychological traits affect AL behaviors at the firm level, though the patterns of the relationship vary with both the type of narcissism and contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how young Chinese consumers' money attitudes influence their compulsive buying behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 303 undergraduate students from Tianjin and Ningbo (two major cities in coastal China) answered a self‐administered questionnaire.

Findings

Money attitudes were found to significantly affect young Chinese consumers' compulsive buying behaviour. Specifically, the Retention‐Time dimension significantly affected both male and female consumers' compulsive buying. However, the Power‐Prestige dimension only affected male consumers' compulsive buying. Finally, the Quality dimension had a greater impact on male than on female consumers' compulsive buying.

Research limitations/implications

The data were collected in two major cities in the coastal region of China. Given the differences between coastal and inland China, caution must be taken when generalizing the research results to young consumers from inland China.

Practical implications

The discussion of the relationships between young Chinese consumers' money attitudes and their compulsive buying will help marketers and policy makers to better understand these consumers' spending behaviour. Thus, marketers can identify new market opportunities and form marketing strategies to target young consumers in China. On the other hand, policy makers can also form more effective education strategies to help young consumers to spend wisely.

Originality/value

Different from previous research in money attitudes and compulsive behaviour, the research provides an in‐depth overview of how male and female young Chinese consumers perceive money and how their beliefs about money affect their spending.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital technology (DT) is a massive and robust tool for organizational success. This paper aims to examine the roles of digitalization and digital innovation (DI) in developing the capability of a digital economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used a cross-sectional study to collect the data from the managers of Egyptian SME manufacturing firms. This study utilized 322 samples.

Findings

From applying the structural equation model (SEM), this study’s findings show that digital capability (DC) and digital orientation (DO) exert a positive effect on the firm’s digital economy capability (DEC). In addition, DC has a positive impact on DI. In contrast, digital technology self-efficacy (DTSE) negatively predicts DEC. This study’s results also confirm DO’s negative effect on DI. The DTSE is a positive enabler of DI that has also positively affected the DEC. The mediating results demonstrate that DI reinforces the positive connection between DO and DEC. On the other hand, DI does not mediate the connection between DO and DEC and between DTSE and DEC.

Practical implications

This study’s outcomes support policymakers and manufacturing organizations in employing DT to improve DEC and, thereby, develop firm performance and success. The study’s findings also encourage organizations to invest in bringing about a digital culture within them. Finally, by developing DT and DI, firms can nurture a conducive culture of creativity and forward-thinking.

Originality/value

This study directly overcomes the need for an integrated framework of all DI, DTSE, DO, DC and DEC. Furthermore, DI’s mediating contribution between DC and DEC, between DO and DEC and between DTSE and DEC adds fresh insights to the existing literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines whether, how and when socially responsible human resource management (SRHRM) practices increase employees' in-role and extra-role corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses data from 422 employees of 68 companies.

Findings

SRHRM improves employees' in-role CSR-specific performance via impression management motivation and enhance extra-role CSR-specific performance via prosocial motivation. Moral identity symbolization strengthens the relationship between SRHRM and impression management motivation, and moral identity internalization reinforces the relationship between SRHRM and prosocial motivation. The authors also propose mediated moderation models.

Practical implications

This study indicates that company can adopt SRHRM practices to improve employees' in-role and extra-role CSR-specific performance.

Originality/value

This study reveals how and when SRHRM practices influence employees' CSR-specific performance and sheds light on the social impacts of SRHRM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study a method to optimize the arrangement of the devices on a smart assembly workbench, which help to reduce fatigue and improve efficiency for the worker.

Design/methodology/approach

The optimization priority is studied based on the users’ decisions, a mathematical model of the layout optimization is established from ergonomic perspective and an improved algorithm is adopted to solve the built the mathematical model.

Findings

Ergonomic software Jack is chosen to simulate the four layout schemes obtained. Through comparative analysis of the simulation results, it is proven that the optimal solution can be obtained using the improved algorithm.

Originality/value

The mathematical model built on observation comfort, operation comfort and device accessibility, as well as the improved algorithm in this paper, has some reference values for the layout design of smart assembly workbench.

Abstract

Purpose

Multi-sensor fusion in robotic dexterous hands is a hot research field. However, there is little research on multi-sensor fusion rules. This study aims to introduce a multi-sensor fusion algorithm using a motor force sensor, film pressure sensor, temperature sensor and angle sensor, which can form a consistent interpretation of grasp stability by sensor fusion without multi-dimensional force/torque sensors.

Design/methodology/approach

This algorithm is based on the three-finger force balance theorem, which provides a judgment method for the unknown force direction. Moreover, the Monte Carlo method calculates the grasping ability and judges the grasping stability under a certain confidence interval using probability and statistics. Based on three fingers, the situation of four- and five-fingered dexterous hand has been expanded. Moreover, an experimental platform was built using dexterous hands, and a grasping experiment was conducted to confirm the proposed algorithm. The grasping experiment uses three fingers and five fingers to grasp different objects, use the introduced method to judge the grasping stability and calculate the accuracy of the judgment according to the actual grasping situation.

Findings

The multi-sensor fusion algorithms are universal and can perform multi-sensor fusion for multi-finger rigid, flexible and rigid-soft coupled dexterous hands. The three-finger balance theorem and Monte Carlo method can better replace the discrimination method using multi-dimensional force/torque sensors.

Originality/value

A new multi-sensor fusion algorithm is proposed and verified. According to the experiments, the accuracy of grasping judgment is more than 85%, which proves that the method is feasible.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively explore the dimensions of Chinese culture and further investigate the underlying mechanisms via which the Chinese culture, in various dimensions, affect the overseas performance of Chinese multinational enterprises (CMNE) expatriates. Along with the awakening of China, not only CMNEs but also the Chinese culture have infiltrated the world market. The uniqueness of Chinese culture has attracted considerable attention of a majority of practitioners, while relevant research on how it affects CMNE expatriates’ performance sounds rare. In contrast to domestic employees, the performance of CMNE expatriates is more likely to be influenced by Chinese culture because of the potential cross-border cultural conflicts between the home and host countries. Additionally, the impact of Chinese culture on CMNE expatriates’ performance may vary according to different cultural dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

Comparative case study is adopted for this research. After sufficient literature review and interviews with human resource (HR) staff, this paper structured the research, and then conducted 30 in-depth interviews with Chinese expatriates from both state-owned enterprises and private-owned enterprises.

Findings

This paper identifies that the Chinese culture do affect CMNE expatriates performance; however, the degree of its effect diversifies according to different cultural dimensions, namely, individual-level culture including Reniqng, Mianzi and social-level culture including power distance, Guanxi, Yinyang, Hexie and collectivism.

Research limitations/implications

A limitation of this study is that the sample is not big enough and empirical tests are needed to validate or refute the model. Nevertheless, due to the fact that it is still during the period of initial study, the conceptual development raised by this paper would help us to gain good insights from these important and unexplored areas of national culture, which is being thought to affect performance in CMNEs.

Practical implications

Through reviewing the relevant literature and deeply analyzing Chinese culture, this paper attempts to help young Chinese MNEs to build up and/or improve performance appraisal method and system according to the unique Chinese culture, and to supply a theoretical support for HR personnel to make related policies for the sake of improving expatriate performance overseas.

Social implications

This paper is the first attempt to dig and explore the whole picture, and refine the dimensions of Chinese culture from individual level and social level. It aims to lay a foundation for the research related to Chinese culture, and to some extent, supply a theoretical support to motivate more researchers to explore more ways to improve the performance of expatriates from young CMNEs.

Originality/value

This paper presents the whole frame of Chinese culture and from an integral Chinese perspective digs the Chinese cultural dimensions from individual level and social level for the first time. According to the social cognitive theory, this paper provides a firm foundation for scholars to understand Chinese culture as well as to analyze the related relationship with performance, and for CMNEs to develop and utilize the effect of national culture to improve the performance of expatriates overseas. So far, the research on Chinese culture and the effect of national culture overseas have not yet been well considered.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to use visual and inertial sensors to achieve real-time location. How to provide an accurate location has become a popular research topic in the field of indoor navigation. Although the complementarity of vision and inertia has been widely applied in indoor navigation, many problems remain, such as inertial sensor deviation calibration, unsynchronized visual and inertial data acquisition and large amount of stored data.

Design/methodology/approach

First, this study demonstrates that the vanishing point (VP) evaluation function improves the precision of extraction, and the nearest ground corner point (NGCP) of the adjacent frame is estimated by pre-integrating the inertial sensor. The Sequential Similarity Detection Algorithm (SSDA) and Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) algorithms are adopted to accurately match the adjacent NGCP in the estimated region of interest. Second, the model of visual pose is established by using the parameters of the camera itself, VP and NGCP. The model of inertial pose is established by pre-integrating. Third, location is calculated by fusing the model of vision and inertia.

Findings

In this paper, a novel method is proposed to fuse visual and inertial sensor to locate indoor environment. The authors describe the building of an embedded hardware platform to the best of their knowledge and compare the result with a mature method and POSAV310.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a VP evaluation function that is used to extract the most advantages in the intersection of a plurality of parallel lines. To improve the extraction speed of adjacent frame, the authors first proposed fusing the NGCP of the current frame and the calibrated pre-integration to estimate the NGCP of the next frame. The visual pose model was established using extinction VP and NGCP, calibration of inertial sensor. This theory offers the linear processing equation of gyroscope and accelerometer by the model of visual and inertial pose.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to facilitate the research and development of resilient navigation approaches, explore the robustness of adversarial training to different interferences and promote their practical applications in real complex environments.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors first summarize the real accidents of self-driving cars and develop a set of methods to simulate challenging scenarios by introducing simulated disturbances and attacks into the input sensor data. Then a robust and transferable adversarial training approach is proposed to improve the performance and resilience of current navigation models, followed by a multi-modality fusion-based end-to-end navigation network to demonstrate real-world performance of the methods. In addition, an augmented self-driving simulator with designed evaluation metrics is built to evaluate navigation models.

Findings

Synthetical experiments in simulator demonstrate the robustness and transferability of the proposed adversarial training strategy. The simulation function flow can also be used for promoting any robust perception or navigation researches. Then a multi-modality fusion-based navigation framework is proposed as a light-weight model to evaluate the adversarial training method in real-world.

Originality/value

The adversarial training approach provides a transferable and robust enhancement for navigation models both in simulation and real-world.
