Abstract

Virtual assembly (VA) based on virtual reality (VR) is a key technique of virtual manufacturing. It provides not only an intuitive and interactive interface for virtual product design, but also an efficient method to analyze or verify assembly performance of these products. Preliminary investigations of constructing a VA system were implemented in this paper. There were three key techniques in constructing a VA system, which were data transformation from CAD system to VA system, collision detection, and virtual manipulation with a virtual hand. These key techniques were analyzed further and their concrete algorithms were given. At last an experimental VA system was set‐up to verify these algorithms. It is proved that the transformed data are sufficient, which can satisfy the VA system's requirement; the collision detection algorithm is efficient as it assures the system to be real time; and the virtual manipulation algorithm guarantees the system's reality and maneuverability.

Abstract

The cultural tourism industry, which has subtly met the needs and solved the major problem of the current age, is a new growth point for the current city economic growth. Therefore, its position in the industrial structure system will be increasingly improved. The development of the cultural tourism industry also provides an important opportunity for the renewal and re-engineering of urban space. For the current urban space construction crisis needs the integration of historical and cultural elements urgently while the development of the cultural tourism industry itself happened to need the city to provide the necessary carrying space and incubation carrier urgently as well. Thus this research discusses the construction of urban visual planning system and the specific implementation path from the perspective of the development of cultural tourism industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Virtual reality (VR) for product assembly has been studied for more than 20 years but its practical application in industry is still very much in its infancy. Haptics is a new and important interaction method for VR and a strong and growing research area, however, it still remains a virtually unknown concept for industrial application.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VR and haptics for product assembly, from rigid parts to soft cables.

Findings

Some new ideas and research progresses in recent years are especially investigated. First the concepts and classifications of virtual assembly are introduced and the different virtual environment systems for product assembly are discussed. Then the major research groups, typical systems and major research issues are explored in detail, treating rigid parts and soft cables separately. Lastly, the barriers preventing successful application of virtual assembly are discussed and future research directions are also summarized.

Originality/value

The paper provides an overview and analysis of VR and haptics for product assembly, including both rigid parts and soft cables.
