The global emphasis on performance-based assessment marginalises teachers' professional work with assessment and affects what is valued and devaluated in education. Thus, it affects students, teachers and schools, how the education system is governed, external experts, educational industry and societies. The programme Assessment for learning (AfL), which developed in the wake of the comprehensive high stakes test regime in England in the 1980s, was initially meant to counteract the democratic deficit caused by the increasing focus on metrics and large-scale assessments. As a backdrop, this chapter discusses performance standards in assessment and their consequences and then asks: What potential do professional standards in assessment have compared to current performance standards, and what do professional standards in assessment look like? The following argument is elaborated: In the endeavour to make education meaningful and relevant for students and societies, there is a need to shift from a focus on (global) standards for assessing students' performance to a focus on professional standards for teachers' work in assessment.

Although the structure of texts and the way they are produced and understood are active areas for research in a range of disciplines — linguistics, psychology, artificial intelligence and information science — this research has not yet produced convincing computer‐based solutions to the problem of producing abstracts of technical papers. Genuinely knowledge‐based approaches are probably furthest from producing practical results, because of the amount of background knowledge that they presuppose and because of the difficulty in principle of finding appropriate representations and processes. After reviewing the kinds of structure in abstracts that seem pertinent to the abstracting problem, we discuss a rule‐based approach that requires a relatively simple knowledge base, partitioned into two sets of rules: one for recognising textual fragments that explicitly signal the document topic, and another for detecting when referring expressions (especially pronouns) are linked to objects mentioned or evoked in a different sentence. These two rule sets are used in a method of exctracting from text to produce a paragraph which can function as an abstract, pioneered by Paice at the University of Lancaster. The second stage of the method is designed to ensure that sentences extracted in the first do not contain any references to parts of the text that have not been extracted, thus ensuring a minimal standard of coherence. In refining these methods, definite noun phases (those beginning with ‘the’) pose a particular problem, which is being addressed in current joint work by Paice and the author.

The proportional diminution of African American males in higher education is a complex societal issue and, as with most complex issues, defies simple solutions. The complexity of the issue is grounded in a less than humane history and the resulting social, cultural, economic, emotional, mental, and spiritual factors that to varying degrees have been shaped by that history (interview with Wilson, 1997). These factors are intimately and intricately interwoven into one another forming a whole that is not easy to analyze and characterize.

The emphasis of this survey is on motion picture reference material that has been published since 1982. This update does not, for the most part, include titles covered in a prior RSR article (1:4; 1983), written by myself, or in an even earlier article by Leslie Kane (7:1; 1979). In those few instances where titles that have appeared in the earlier RSR film surveys are discussed, it is because they now have a new subject emphasis.

It is now forty years since there appeared H. R. Plomer's first volume Dictionary of the booksellers and printers who were at work in England, Scotland and Ireland from 1641 to 1667. This has been followed by additional Bibliographical Society publications covering similarly the years up to 1775. From the short sketches given in this series, indicating changes of imprint and type of work undertaken, scholars working with English books issued before the closing years of the eighteenth century have had great assistance in dating the undated and in determining the colour and calibre of any work before it is consulted.
