Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a literature review on human factors in aircraft maintenance and to analyze and synthesize the findings in the literature on human factors engineering in aircraft maintenance.

Design/methodology/approach

The review adopts a threefold approach: searching and collecting the scientific literature; sorting them on the basis of relevance and applications; and review of the scientific evidences. Broad areas of aircraft maintenance regulations are identified and each area was explored to study the level of scientific growth and publications. Notable theories, models and concepts are being summarized.

Findings

Application of human factor principles in aviation spread beyond the technical arena of man-machine interface. The discipline has created a great impact on aircraft design, operations and maintenance. Its applications have percolated into design of aircraft maintenance facilities, task cards and equipment. Human factor concepts are being used for maintenance resource management. The principles are applied to shape the safety behavior and culture in aviation maintenance workplace. Nevertheless, the review unfolds immense potential for future research.

Research limitations/implications

Research outcomes of non-aviation studies are also reviewed and consolidated to extend the applications to the aviation industry.

Practical implications

This review would be a consolidated source of information confining to the physical aspect of human factors engineering in aircraft maintenance. It is intended to serve as a quick reference guide to the researchers and maintenance practitioners.

Social implications

It brought out the benefits of adopting the principles of human factor engineering in aircraft maintenance. Application of human factor philosophy ensures enhanced safety in air transport, personal safety and well-being of maintenance personnel.

Originality/value

This is a unique review based on aircraft maintenance regulations that are baseline performance standards made mandatory by regulatory authorities. Therefore, the review has been considered to be made on aircraft maintenance regulatory requirements that surpass corporate or competitive strategies in aviation maintenance organization.

Abstract

Purpose

Scheduling of aircraft maintenance operations is a gap in the literature. Maintenance times should be determined close to the real-life to schedule aircraft maintenance operations effectively. The learning effect, which has been studied extensively in the machine scheduling literature, has not been investigated on aircraft maintenance times. In the literature, the production times under the learning effect have been examined in numerous studies but for merely manufacturing and assembly lines. A model for determining base and line maintenance times in civil aviation under the learning effect has not been proposed yet. It is pretty challenging to determine aircraft maintenance times due to the various aircraft configurations, extended maintenance periods, different worker shifts and workers with diverse experience and education levels. The purpose of this study is to determine accurate aircraft maintenance times rigorously with a new model which includes the group learning effect with the multi-products and shifts, plateau effect, multi sub-operations and labour firings/rotations.

Design/methodology/approach

Aircraft maintenance operations are carried out in shifts. Each maintenance operation consists of many sub-operations that are performed by groups of workers. Thus, various models, e.g. learning curve for maintenance line (MLC), MLC with plateau factor (MPLC), MLC with group factor (MGLC) were developed and used in this study. The performance and efficiency of the models were compared with the current models in the literature, such as the Yelle Learning model (Yelle), single learning curve (SLC) model and SLC with plateau factor model (SLC-P). Estimations of all these models were compared with actual aircraft maintenance times in terms of mean absolute deviation (MAD), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and mean square of the error (MSE) values. Seven years (2014–2020) maintenance data of one of the top ten maintenance companies in civil aviation were analysed for the application and comparison of learning curve models.

Findings

The best estimations in terms of MAD, MAPE and MSE values are, respectively, gathered by MGLC, SLC-P, MPLC, MLC, SLC and YELLE models. This study revealed that the models (MGLC, SLC-P, MPLC), including the plateau factor, are more efficient in estimating accurate aircraft maintenance times. Furthermore, MGLC always made the closest estimations to the actual aircraft maintenance times. The results show that the MGLC model is more accurate than all of the other models for all sub-operations. The MGLC model is promising for the aviation industry in determining aircraft maintenance times under the learning effect.

Originality/value

In this study, learning curve models, considering groups of workers working in shifts, have been developed and employed for the first time for estimating more realistic maintenance times in aircraft maintenance. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the effect of group learning on maintenance times in aircraft maintenance operations has not been studied. The novelty of the models are their applicability for groups of workers with different education and experience levels working in the same shift where they can learn in accordance with their proportion of contribution to the work and learning continues throughout shifts. The validity of the proposed models has been proved by comparing actual aircraft maintenance data. In practice, the MGLC model could efficiently be used for aircraft maintenance planning, certifying staff performance evaluations and maintenance trainings. Moreover, aircraft maintenance activities can be scheduled under the learning effect and a more realistic maintenance plan could be gathered in that way.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to promote a system dynamics-discrete event simulation (SD-DES) hybrid modelling framework, one that is useful for investigating problems comprising multifaceted elements which interact and evolve over time, such as is found in TPM.

Design/methodology/approach

The hybrid modelling framework commences with system observation using field notes which culminate in model conceptualization to structure the problem. Thereafter, an SD-DEShybrid model is designed for the system, and simulated to proffer improvement programmes. The hybrid model emphasises the interactions between key constructs relating to the system, feedback structures and process flow concepts that are the hallmarks of many problems in production. The modelling framework is applied to the TPM operations of a bottling plant where sub-optimal TPM performance was affecting throughput performance.

Findings

Simulation results for the case study show that intangible human factors such as worker motivation do not significantly affect TPM performance. What is most critical is ensuring full compliance to routine and scheduled maintenance tasks and coordinating the latter to align with rate of machine defect creation.

Research limitations/implications

The framework was developed with completeness, generality and reuse in view. It remains to be applied to a wide variety of TPM and non-TPM-related problems.

Practical implications

The developed hybrid model is scalable and can fit into an existing discrete event simulation model of a production system. The case study findings indicate where TPM managers should focus their efforts.

Originality/value

The investigation of TPM using SD-DES hybrid modelling is a novelty.

Abstract

Purpose

This research developed and examined a mathematical model for concurrent corrective and preventive maintenance policy of a system of series configuration.

Design/methodology/approach

A mathematical model was developed to maximize availability, and maximal net revenues, and minimal cost. Different probability distributions for time to failure and time to repair were considered. The model was then implemented on a real case study, which was studied under corrective maintenance policy and concurrent corrective and preventive policy.

Findings

A comparison between results at current policy (90 days) and optimal period of corrective and preventive policy was conducted. It was found that availability, profit was increased from 94.4% and $20.091 – 96.5% and $24.803, respectively. Further, the cost was reduced from $1104.8 to $797.22.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed optimization model can be adopted in planning maintenance activities for a single machine as well as for a system of series configuration machines under various probability distributions.

Practical implications

The proposed model can significantly enhance performance of the production as well as maintenance systems. In addition, the developed model may support maintenance engineering in effective management of maintenance resources and the performance of its activities.

Originality/value

This research considers a mathematical model with multi-objective functions and distinct probability distributions for time-to-failure for a system of series machines. Moreover, appropriate approximation solution was deployed to find integral of some functions. Finally, it provides maintenance planning for a single machine or a series of machines.

Abstract

This chapter provides an alternative interpretation of the emergence of the “Ramsey-Cass-Koopmans” growth model, a framework which, alongside the overlapping generation model, is the dominant approach in today’s macroeconomics. By focusing on the role Paul Samuelson played through the works he developed in the turnpike literature, the author’s goal is to provide a more accurate history of growth theory of the 1940–1960s, one which started before Solow (1956) but never had him as a central reference. Inspired by John von Neumann’s famous 1945 article, Samuelson wrote his first turnpike paper by trying to conjecture an alternative optimal growth path (Samuelson, 1949 [1966]). In the 1960s, after reformulating the intertemporal utility model presented in Ramsey (1928), Samuelson began to propound it as a representative agent model. Through Samuelson’s interactions with colleagues and PhD students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and given his standing in the profession, he encouraged a broader use of that device in macroeconomics, particularly, in growth theory. With the publication of Samuelson (1965), Tjalling Koopmans and Lionel McKenzie rewrote their own articles in order to account for the new approach. This work complements a recently written account on growth theory by Assaf and Duarte (2018).

Abstract

This research provides accounting-ethics authors and administrators with a benchmark for accounting-ethics research. While Bernardi and Bean (2010) considered publications in business-ethics and accounting’s top-40 journals this study considers research in eight accounting-ethics and public-interest journals, as well as, 34 business-ethics journals. We analyzed the contents of our 42 journals for the 25-year period between 1991 through 2015. This research documents the continued growth (Bernardi & Bean, 2007) of accounting-ethics research in both accounting-ethics and business-ethics journals. We provide data on the top-10 ethics authors in each doctoral year group, the top-50 ethics authors over the most recent 10, 20, and 25 years, and a distribution among ethics scholars for these periods. For the 25-year timeframe, our data indicate that only 665 (274) of the 5,125 accounting PhDs/DBAs (13.0% and 5.4% respectively) in Canada and the United States had authored or co-authored one (more than one) ethics article.
