Abstract

Since the first Volume of this Bibliography there has been an explosion of literature in all the main areas of business. The researcher and librarian have to be able to uncover specific articles devoted to certain topics. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume III, in addition to the annotated list of articles as the two previous volumes, contains further features to help the reader. Each entry within has been indexed according to the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus and thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid information retrieval. Each article has its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. The first Volume of the Bibliography covered seven journals published by MCB University Press. This Volume now indexes 25 journals, indicating the greater depth, coverage and expansion of the subject areas concerned.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to combine and compare the experiences of appreciative inquiry (AI) using AI methods for data creation, collection and analysis to describe a set of “rules of thumb” for the occasions when AI can add value in managing operational and cultural changes in healthcare organisations.

Design/methodology/approach

The team that began to introduce AI to King's College Hospital met twice, each time using AI methods to collect and process narrative of their experiences of AI in their work. The eight members recalled as many of the AI‐related experiences and applications in their professional lives as possible, big and small. The data were collected as key points and quotable quotes, and shared for reflection, and a second time to identify and record common features of success and those aspects which seemed to be responsible for that success.

Findings

The paper identified ten groups of applications where AI offered solutions superior to others used, or where the currently applied methodology reached an impasse that was resolved by AI. It proposes that these applications are added to the growing list of uses of AI in change management and managing organisational behaviour.

Originality/value

While there are many published descriptions of successful use of AI in organisational development projects, the paper is unable to identify a compendium of practical descriptions of the use of AI. The paper is therefore valuable for anyone in a management or change‐management role with interest and some experience in AI in deciding how to use this methodology from day to day.

Abstract

The growth and nature of bank marketing during the past decade has been a reflection of the intensity of competition for personal savings within the financial sector and the development of financial services. Early in the 1970s, various competitive pressures finally led banks to adopt a marketing concept, both in theory and practice. The authors examine the use of advertising as a marketing tool and then explore the significance of media selection in the approaches adopted by the UK banks to market segmentation.

Abstract

FROM the ashes of the Air Canada DC‐9 inflight inferno and British Airways B‐737 runway disaster at Manchester, fire will rise to wreak further untold havoc somewhere. This is inevitable and just about the only certainty surrounding the most capricious of primordial forces. Where and when it will happen, are less predictable, but as long as man continues to flirt with fire, he is sure to unleash the catastrophic forces which cause incalculable human suffering and immense material damage.

Abstract

Purpose

Effective integration of information literacy skills into the business curriculum requires the development of collaborative partnerships between teaching faculty and librarians. Developing a good partnership requires an understanding of the teaching faculty's perspectives. This paper aims to address these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was sent to business teaching faculty at California State Universities to determine their expectations in regards to student information literacy skills.

Findings

Writing a report or project that required in‐depth research is one of the major expectations. All faculty surveyed expect students to use library research for their assignments.

Originality/value

Business faculty and librarians will be able to use these findings in developing guidelines to integrate information literacy into coursework, assignments and research tools.

Abstract

Purpose

Term suggestion is a very useful information retrieval technique that tries to suggest relevant terms for users' queries, to help advertisers find more appropriate terms relevant to their target market. This paper aims to focus on the problem of using several semantic analysis methods to implement a term suggestion system.

Design/methodology/approach

Three semantic analysis techniques are adopted – latent semantic indexing (LSI), probabilistic latent semantic indexing (PLSI), and a keyword relationship graph (KRG) – to implement a term suggestion system.

Findings

This paper shows that using multiple semantic analysis techniques can give significant performance improvements.

Research limitations/implications

The suggested terms returned from the system may be out of date, since the system uses a batch processing mode to update the training parameter.

Originality/value

The paper shows that the benefit of the techniques is to overcome the problems of synonymy and polysemy over the information retrieval field, by using a vector space model. Moreover, an intelligent stopping strategy is proposed to save the required number of iterations for probabilistic latent semantic indexing.
