Abstract

A report on some industrial applications of vision systems at the Manufacturing Week exhibition. Describes installations of one type of system at a disk drive manufacturer and at an electricity meter manufacturer, in which both inspect for the presence of components critical to the performance of the two products. Another system highlighted is for measuring sheet metal stampings at high speeds. Also, new products reviewed at the show include a completely digital machine vision measuring system; a PCB inspection system and a video camera‐based measuring machine.

Abstract

Reviews vision systems exhibited at the Manufacturing Week Exhibition held in the NEC, Birmingham. Highlights systems that exemplify the trend towards standardized off‐the‐shelf units, and the increasing use of PC‐based hardware and software running in Microsoft Windows. Grey‐scale image processing is becoming more widespread and replacing binary blob analysis techniques. This makes the systems more resilient to ambient conditions and increases the hardiness for industrial application. Gives examples of some of the applications of these systems.
