Abstract

This paper reports on research which compared consumers' stated reasons for buying foreign cars (gas mileage, price, quality) with their beliefs as to the kind of person who drove foreign cars as opposed to domestic cars. (Trendy, modern, upscale individuals.) It is then suggested that the status‐heavy motives are the operational ones; that foreign cars are bought for these affective reasons rather than the rational ones consumers believe they used. Possible shifts in marketing strategy to bring it into conformance with the real motives are discussed. Evaluated are; first, making domestic cars appear foreign, second, a head‐on attack and third, a concentrated attack on any existing mechanical or design deficiencies. Finally, some generalization from the automobile history to the product life cycle, in general, is proposed. This suggests that as a sophisticated product matures, appeals must be shifted from technologically oriented promotion to promotion intended to highlight the high status of the owners of the product.

Abstract

This research provides accounting-ethics authors and administrators with a benchmark for accounting-ethics research. While Bernardi and Bean (2010) considered publications in business-ethics and accounting’s top-40 journals this study considers research in eight accounting-ethics and public-interest journals, as well as, 34 business-ethics journals. We analyzed the contents of our 42 journals for the 25-year period between 1991 through 2015. This research documents the continued growth (Bernardi & Bean, 2007) of accounting-ethics research in both accounting-ethics and business-ethics journals. We provide data on the top-10 ethics authors in each doctoral year group, the top-50 ethics authors over the most recent 10, 20, and 25 years, and a distribution among ethics scholars for these periods. For the 25-year timeframe, our data indicate that only 665 (274) of the 5,125 accounting PhDs/DBAs (13.0% and 5.4% respectively) in Canada and the United States had authored or co-authored one (more than one) ethics article.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

The first chapter in the volume, by George A. Barrett and Michael L. Brookshire, is entitled “The Forensic Economics of Medical Monitoring Damages in the United States.” It focuses on a relatively new category of compensatory damages, the measurement of the costs of monitoring the medical condition of a group of designated individuals. These individuals may have alleged that they were adversely affected by the tortuous conduct of certain defendants. Barrett and Brookshire explain the legal parameters, which govern the ways such costs may be measured. They also provide a listing of the relevant cases across different states and in federal courts.

An astute and dedicated follower of The New York Times Book Review “Bestsellers” column may have noted an unusual entry in the hardcover bestseller list on September 11, 1983. The nonfiction title popped up, in fifth place no less, and just as quickly went off the list in the next issue of NYTBR; but that is not what made the title unusual. What did is the fact that it was published by Thomas Nelson Publishers, a religious publishing house which claims to be the “world's leading Bible publisher,” and produces such giants for the bible‐buying world as The Open Bible, The New King James Version, and The Good News Bible, huge sellers all. The book which made the list in The New York Times Book Review, however, was not a bible, but a self‐help book called Tough Times Never Last But Tough People Do, by Robert H. Schuller, a radio/TV evangelist whose weekly programs claim a listening/viewing audience in the millions.

In a study of agreement between self‐ratings and supervisor ratings, self‐rating data from 293 teachers in 14 different high schools were cor‐related at the individual‐level with supervisor ratings. The average intracase correlation showed moderate agreement between self‐ and supervisor ratings. Intracase correlations were associated with gender and tenure, but not associated with satisfaction with one's supervisor or the quality of one's relationship with one's supervisor. Also, agreement between self‐ and supervisor ratings was significantly greater for sub‐ordinates with lower organizational tenure. Implications for the use of self‐ratings are discussed.
