Abstract

These notes are written for trainers and managers to make them question whether they are doing all they can to make their staff training as effective as possible. I am writing it from both view points, as manager of the P‐E Consulting Group Training Division and as a management trainer. The experience which we have had in training and developing our staff has resulted in a 50 percent yearly growth in revenue over the last three years, and a change from making a loss every year to achieving a considerable contribution to the company's profit. Credit for this change must go to all members of the division, but particular reference must be made to the training courses and teambuilding efforts of my colleagues Lee Bryce and Dick Killick, who have been largely responsible for our progress, and also the senior management for their backing during this period.

Abstract

This article has been written to generate ideas on how we can increase the valuable combination of qualities, skills and attitudes which I have called entrepreneurial drive. I have used this term because I cannot think of a better one to describe the drive that some people have to create things, the determination that they have to achieve real progress, and the tenacity which is shown by them to change things despite massive opposition. In this article I have put down my ideas on entrepreneurial drive — what it is, why increase it and how it can be increased to generate discussion which will lead to a greater ability in management to get real progress in Industry, Commerce and the public sector of the economy.
