Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to propose two new 8-node quadrilateral membrane elements with good distortion tolerance for the modified couple stress elasticity based on the unsymmetric finite element method (FEM).
Design/methodology/approach
The nodal rotation degrees of freedom (DOFs) are introduced into the virtual work principle and constrained by the penalty function for approximating the test functions of the physical rotation and curvature. Therefore, only the C0 continuity instead of C1 continuity is required for the displacement during the element construction. The first unsymmetric element assumes the test functions of the displacement and strain using the standard 8-node isoparametric interpolations, while these test functions in the second model are further enhanced by the nodal rotation DOFs. Besides, the trial functions in these two elements are constructed based on the stress functions that can a priori satisfy related governing equations.
Findings
The benchmark tests show that both the two elements can efficiently simulate the size-dependent plane problems, exhibiting good numerical accuracies and high distortion tolerances. In particular, they can still exactly reproduce the constant couple stress state when the element shape deteriorates severely into the degenerated triangle. Moreover, it can also be observed that the second element model, in which the linked interpolation technique is used, has better performance than the first one, especially in capturing the steep gradients of the physical rotations.
Originality/value
As the proposed new elements use only three DOFs per node, they can be readily incorporated into the existing finite element (FE) programs. Thus, they are of great benefit to analysis of size-dependent membrane behaviors of micro/nano structures.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the inter-element coupling effect of membrane and plate components between two adjacent shells occurring on the common boundary.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, three triangular flat shells developed by combining an excellent membrane element (OPT) with three outstanding plate bending elements (DKT, RDKTM and DST-BK), respectively, are used to study this phenomenon. Benchmark tests are implemented to evaluate the performance of three selected plate elements and the formulated flat shells.
Findings
The inter-element coupling effect of membrane and plate components belonging, respectively, to two adjacent shells deteriorate the performance of shells. Therefore, a shell’s performance cannot be guaranteed certainly by the superimposed membrane and plate behaviors.
Practical implications
The “order matching” criterion is proposed to explain this phenomenon and it is concluded that the flat shell that follows this criterion explicitly may alleviate or even overcome the inter-element coupling effect.
Originality/value
Previous studies mainly focus on formulation of high-performance membrane and plate elements. However, the inter-element coupling effect of membrane and plate components between two adjacent shells occurring on the common boundary, has attracted less attention. Thorough benchmark tests for three flat shells are implemented to investigate the phenomenon. The results shows that the inter-element coupling effect deteriorates the performance of shells. And the “order matching” criterion is proposed to explain this phenomenon and it is concluded that the flat shell that follows this criterion explicitly may alleviate or even overcome the inter-element coupling effect.

Abstract
The problems of shear flexible beams are analyzed by the MLPG method based on a locking‐free weak formulation. In order for the weak formulation to be locking‐free, the numerical characteristics of the variational functional for a shear flexible beam, in the thin beam limit, are discussed. Based on these discussions a locking‐free local symmetric weak form is derived by changing the set of two dependent variables in governing equations from that of transverse displacement and total rotation to the set of transverse displacement and transverse shear strain. For the interpolation of the chosen set of dependent variables (i.e. transverse displacement and transverse shear strain) in the locking‐free local symmetric weak form, the recently proposed generalized moving least squares (GMLS) interpolation scheme is utilized, in order to introduce the derivative of the transverse displacement as an additional nodal degree of freedom, independent of the nodal transverse displacement. Through numerical examples, convergence tests are performed. To identify the locking‐free nature of the proposed method, problems of shear flexible beams in the thick beam limit and in the thin beam limit are analyzed, and the numerical results are compared with analytical solutions. The potential of using the truly meshless local Petrov‐Galerkin (MLPG) method is established as a new paradigm in totally locking‐free computational analyses of shear flexible plates and shells.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to propose a new robust membrane finite element for the analysis of plane problems. The suggested element has triangular geometry. Four nodes and 11 degrees of freedom (DOF) are considered for the element. Each of the three vertex nodes has three DOF, two displacements and one drilling. The fourth node that is located inside the element has only two translational DOF.
Design/methodology/approach
The suggested formulation is based on the assumed strain method and satisfies both compatibility and equilibrium conditions within each element. This establishment results in higher insensitivity to the mesh distortion. Enforcement of the equilibrium condition to the assumed strain field leads to considerably high accuracy of the developed formulation.
Findings
To show the merits of the suggested plane element, its different properties, including insensitivity to mesh distortion, particularly under transverse shear forces, immunities to the various locking phenomena and convergence of the element are studied. The obtained results demonstrate the superiority of the suggested element compared with many of the available robust membrane elements.
Originality/value
According to the attained results, the proposed element performs better than the well-known displacement-based elements such as linear strain triangular element, Q4 and Q8 and even is comparable with robust modified membrane elements.

Abstract
Purpose
Poor bending response is a major shortcoming of lower-order elements due to excessive representation of shear stress/strain field. Advanced finite element (FE) formulations for classical elasticity enhance the bending response by either nullifying or filtering some of the symmetric shear stress/strain modes. Nevertheless, the stress/strain field in Cosserat elasticity is asymmetric; consequently any attempt to nullify or filter the anti-symmetric shear stress/strain modes may lead to failure in the constant couple-stress patch test where the anti-symmetric shear stress/strain field is linear. This paper aims at enhancing the bending response of lower-order elements for Cosserat elasticity problems.
Design/methodology/approach
A four-node quadrilateral and an eight-node hexahedron are formulated by hybrid-stress approach. The symmetric stress is assumed as those of Pian and Sumihara and Pian and Tong. The anti-symmetric stress components are first assumed to be completely linear in order to pass the constant couple-stress patch test. The linear modes are then constrained with respect to the prescribed body-couple via the equilibrium conditions.
Findings
Numerical tests show that the hybrid elements can strictly pass the constant couple-stress patch test and are markedly more accurate than the conventional elements as well as the incompatible elements for bending problems in Cosserat elasticity.
Originality/value
This paper proposes a hybrid FE formulation to improve the bending response of four-node quadrilateral and eight-node hexahedral elements for Cosserat elasticity problems without compromising the constant couple-stress patch test.
