Abstract

Purpose

The aim of presented investigation was to test developed testing device Griff tester, created for the objective evaluation of textile hand and to compare the obtained data with sensory evaluation results of textiles, subjected to different final treatments.

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of two finishing products, i.e. the crease‐resistant finishing Knittex® “K” and the softener macro silicone Ultratex® “Ul” upon 100 per cent cotton plain weave fabric was studied by two methods – objective evaluation and sensory analysis. Objective evaluation was done using Griff tester device where disc shaped specimen was extracted through a rounded hole of the stand. Sensory analysis was performed by the panel of 11 trained persons.

Findings

Investigations have shown that both treatments changed the hand of the fabric in the expected direction. Meantime, two experimental methods (objective and sensory approach) have shown their effectiveness to evaluate the textile touch, respectively.

Practical implications

The obtained results proved that criterion Q can be used for sensitive and vivid detection of differences between fabrics, affected by different final treatment operations. The effects of finishing products' concentrations were found to be in accordance with the manufacturer's technical specifications and with the finishing industrialist's expectations.

Originality/value

Investigation results obtained by Griff tester revealed the possibility of fabric hand evaluation on the basis of one relative criterion Q. These results can be linked with some attribute issued of the sensory analysis applied to the characterisation of the tactile feeling.

Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.

Abstract

Presents the results of tests to determine the mechanical stability of textile fusing systems using two instruments: pulser ERDT‐3 and rotary‐rolls set‐up ARRV. The pulser ERDT‐3 allows textile systems in different testing conditions to be fatigued; one‐sided and double‐sided loading. Using instrument ARRV the specimen is not only fatigued in repeated one‐axed loading, but at the same time, its surface is abraded. Determines the relations between fusing conditions, fabric properties and glue line texture under different mechanical treatments. Proves that pressure increase allows a comparatively sufficient initial bond strength of textile systems forum, but this bond proves unstable under mechanical treatment.

Abstract

Presents the results of investigation of fabrics’ and fused systems shrinkage force and its influence on the shape instability of fused textile systems after various treatments such as wetting and drying. Also the method for determination and prediction of the twisting phenomenon of fused composites is presented. From the analysis of the data the twisting phenomenon was characterised by several parameters. They are system’s twisting sign, the shape of twisted system, the twisting coefficient and fused system’s twisting direction.

Abstract

The aim of the presented research is to apply the method of punch deformation for the simulation of textile systems behaviour in serve conditions and on the basis of it create original method and find new criteria for shape stability evaluation. The research was done with the help of three devices of punch loading originally created at Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania), which were attached to the standard tensile testing machine. Creep tests were performed by a special device, clamping radius of which was R=56.5 mm. Creep process was controlled up to the stabilisation of shells height, i.e. after t=48 h. Tests were carried out in wet and dry states of the specimen. Two different types of textile systems (I+K and K+I) composed of two layers were investigated (where K – outer material; I – interlining).

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop the methodology for the imitation of exploitation conditions of textile products as well as to determine the exploitation peculiarities of high‐performance fabrics for outdoor clothing producible in Lithuania.

Design/methodology/approach

Static‐ and dynamic‐cyclic loading was applied for the imitation of exploitation conditions as well as for the investigation of the changes in specimen geometrical parameters.

Findings

The differences in the parameters of textile material stability determined under dry and wet cyclic specimen deformation were determined. The investigation results presented show that the parameters of air permeability can be used for the determination of changes in textile product shapes due to their cyclic washing as well as to the other kinds of wet technological treatment, especially in these cases when the small areas of product material are deformed.

Practical implications

The problems concerned with the methodology for the evaluation of exploitation stability of high‐performance fabrics (woven and knitted) for outdoor clothing are analyzed in this research.

Originality/value

In most cases, the exploitation behaviour of textile materials is investigated under uniaxial or static biaxial deformation. For better imitation of real exploitation conditions of textiles the new testing methodology based on two testing methods was established (original device for punch deformation working in creep mode as well as using wet and dry specimens; device ARRV for cyclic fatigue).
