Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to provide the description of a computational methodology to model the combined propulsive systems of hydrogen propelled air-breathing scramjet vehicles and to evaluate the pollutant and climate-changing emissions.

Design/methodology/approach

Emissions indexes of nitrogen oxide (EINO) and water vapour released by the air turbo rocket (ATR) and dual mode ramjet (DMR) engines of the STRATOFLY air-breathing, hypersonic scramjet vehicle, propelled by hydrogen/air were evaluated. ATR engine operation was assessed for several cruise conditions in both subsonic and supersonic flight regimes in Ecosimpro software, which is an object-oriented thermodynamic design and simulation platform. ATR combustor inlet flow conditions play a key role in the computation of species mass fractions, and these conditions are highly dependent on turbomachinery performance and engine flight regime. A propulsive operational database was created by varying mass flow rates of fuel and flight conditions such as cruise speed and altitude to investigate possible engine operations. The all-inlet conditions in this map are provided to the Cantera-Python chemical/combustion chemistry solver implementing a specially designed and formulated 0D kinetic-thermodynamic methodology successfully used to model and simulate the electric spark ignition required to activate the combustion process of the reacting mixture in the ATR combustion chambers, whereas the coupled aero-thermodynamic/aero-propulsive 0D/1D code i.e. Scramjet PREliminary Aerothermodynamic Design (SPREAD), designed and developed by the Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA) was used for DMR calculations. Results show low emissions of NO according to the optimized design of the ATR; on the other hand, a tuning of operational conditions is needed for DMR, with its complete re-design to be more conclusive. Analogously, the released amount of water vapour is in good agreement with the required combustion efficiency and the expected propulsive performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to detail the reactive flow simulations of a LOX/CH4 multi-element rocket engine. The work has been conducted within the framework of the HYPROB-BREAD project whose main objective is the design, manufacture and testing of a LOX/LCH4 regeneratively cooled ground demonstrator.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical simulations have been carried out with both commercial software and CIRA software developed in house. Two sets of boundary conditions, nominal and experimental, have been applied from which a code-to-code validation has been effected with the former and a code-to-experiment validation with the latter.

Findings

The results presented include both flow data and heat fluxes as well as parameters associated with engine performance, and indicate an excellent agreement with experimental data of a LOX/CH4 multi-element rocket engine.

Originality/value

The research is unique as the CIRA code Numerical Experimental Tool (NExT) has been validated with the commercial software FLUENT as well as with experimental values from the firing of the LOX/CH4 rocket engine demonstrator.

It must be remembered that the exercise described in part 1 was carried out in a carbon arc weathering machine to provide a stable environment. Referring to Fig 7, which shows the absorption spectra of the resins used in this section, it can be seen that the acrylic resin only absorbs to any great extent in the UVB region, and if reference is made to Fig 3, where the spectra of carbon arc radiation and UK summer sunlight are compared, it is seen that the carbon arc is deficient in this area. The protective aspect of titanium dioxide will thus not operate in this weathering environment. If the same exercise was repeated in natural sunlight, then the pigmented paints would show an even greater protective tendency, since all resins absorb to a greater extent as wavelength decreases, but the extent of photocatalysis remains constant. In Fig 7, the two alkyd/MF systems have been represented by a single line because of their chemical similarity.

Abstract

A review of the common photodegradation processes in polymeric coatings is presented, and the photoactivity of titanium dioxide and its consequences are discussed. Experimental work which explores the durability implications of the use of titanium dioxide in coatings is presented. This includes the effects of pigment flocculation, film thickness and photostability of the pigment. The importance of the correct selection of light source for accelerated weathering is stressed. Finally, results are presented from a recent study of the influence of geographical location on the weathering of titanium dioxide pigmented paint films.

Abstract

The current size of individual particles in most pigments is usually below 1μm; this ensures powerful forces of attraction causing the particles to cling to one another forming aggregates. If pigment dispersion stability is not appropriate, particles join again and form flocculates. It is important to know the initial degree of dispersion, its evolution during coating storage and the influence on its dry film anticorrosive properties. Several anticorrosive coatings were formulated starting from an epoxy resin as binder, tin tannates as inhibitor and a red iron oxide‐micronised talc mixture as inert pigment. Variables studied were pigment dispersion time and coating ageing time in storage. The degree of dispersion was determined by optical photomicroscopy to establish the shape and size of associated particles present in the system. The flow properties of anticorrosive coatings due to the different dispersion degree were evaluated through rheological tests. Coating film behaviour was also assessed for several dispersion times and ageing periods in laboratory, employing a salt spray (fog) cabinet and a 100 per cent relative humidity chamber.

Abstract

The Paint Research Association's sixth International conference was held in Brussels from November 4th to 6th under the above title. Like its predecessors, it was concerned with developments at the very frontiers of knowledge, and attracted over 200 participants from over 100 companies from Europe, Japan and the United States of America. Most representatives were from paint or raw material manufacturers. Participants, who recieved extended abstract of the papers, were well‐pleased with the Conference, which formed part of the celebration of the P.R.A.'s Diamond Jubilee. The founder‐members would be delighted to see the P.R.A.'s role in bringing together so many distinguished lecturers and important advances in paint technology, described in 17 papers from so many countries; four sessions enabled good time for discussion periods.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify critical personality traits affecting and influencing buying behaviour in high involvement consumer durables. It also intends to guide practitioners in selecting appropriate marketing frameworks, consumer segments and processes considering the characteristics of consumer behaviour in developing economies.

Design/methodology/approach

It systematically reviews the literature on consumer personality traits, its measurement and related consumer buying behaviour. It uses data collected from potential car buyers at various car showrooms across the Indian subcontinent. The authors have worked with the online survey firm Qualtrics, to gather a data set of 328 car purchase intenders’ responses to their validated survey. The model was tested using the SmartPLS.

Findings

The personality traits of imagination, agreeableness and social factors positively influenced attitude towards automobiles with advanced technology. Further, in line with the theory of planned behaviour, it is seen that a positive attitude towards advanced technology and design for automobiles makes a person more willing to pay for the same.

Research limitations/implications

The study is confined to consumers intending to purchase a car, who are Indian residents.

Originality/value

It adds to the comparatively lesser body of study on the impact of personality traits on intentions and attitudes in high involvement consumer durable purchases. Further, it serves as an empirical examination of the adoption of new technologies, in the context of high involvement consumer durables. For practicing managers, it provides a reference for deciding future development directions and approaches related to the effective market launch strategies and commercialization of advanced technology automobiles in India.
