Abstract

Interrelated conflict and transformation are associated with post World War II U.S. military. Conflicts within the command structure are depicted by military officers in their writings. Transformation, characterised by military sociologists as a process of “civilianisation,” has informed understanding over the past few decades. However, neither the officer‐writers‘ “close‐up” perspective nor, in retrospect, the sociologists’ sanguine formulations effectively interrelate structural transformation and conflicts in command. In this respect, these literatures suggest relevant analogies: officer‐writers reflect existential crisis not unlike many traditional peoples experiencing consequences of externally induced economic change; sociological characterisations of “civilianisation,” like those of “modernisation,” fail to account for adverse and conflictual consequences of such “development”. Both the “crisis in command” and sociological failures to explicate it may be related to political economy's transformation of the military. That is the argument entailed in this article.

Volume IV, like Volume III, contains features to help the reader to retrieve relevant literature from MCB University Press' considerable output. Each entry within has been indexed according to author(s) and the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus. The latter thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid retrieval. Abstract

Discusses the fact that scientific management′s character and Taylor′s legacy are often treated as ideology and technology for controlling labour. However, proposes that scientific management be located in the conflicts and institutionalized accomodations of market, democracy, rule of law, professional administration, and interrelated forms of culture and applied knowledge. Proposes that scientific management was shaped by and, in turn, helped to shape, the dynamic structure of modern capitalism′s core organizing modes. Illustrates this by discussing late‐nineteenth century changes in American municipal administration. Examines the Soviet attempt to appropriate scientific management without the core regimes which shaped it in the West. Argues that scientific management′s abiding character and Taylor′s legacy are found in the institutional evolution of modern capitalist societies, not in the rise and fall of command economies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extend the penalty concept to treat partial slip, free surface, contact and related boundary conditions in viscous flow simulation.

Design/methodology/approach

The penalty partial‐slip formulation is analysed and related to the classical Navier slip condition. The same penalty scheme also allows partial penetration through a boundary, hence the implementation of porous wall boundaries. The finite element method is used for investigating and interpreting penalty approaches to boundary conditions.

Findings

The generalised penalty approach is verified by means of a novel variant of the circular‐Couette flow problem, having partial slip on one of the cylindrical boundaries, for which an analytic solution is derived. Further verificationis provided by consideration of viscous flow over a sphere with partial slip on the surface, and comparison of numerical and classical solutions. Numerical studies illustrate the versatility of the approach.

Research limitations/implications

The penalty approach is applied to some different boundaries: partial slip and partial penetration with no/full slip/penetration as limiting cases; free surface; space‐ and time‐varying boundary conditions which allow progressive contact over time. Application is made to curved and inclined boundaries. Sensitivity of flow to penalty parameters is an avenue for continued research, as is application of the penalty approach for non‐Newtonian flows.

Originality/value

This is the first work to show the relation between penalty formulation of boundary conditions and physical boundary conditions. It provides a method that overcomes past difficulties in implementing partial slip on boundaries of general shape, and which handles progressive contact. It also provides useful benchmark problems for future studies.
