Abstract
Purpose
Platforms have often been considered an excellent example of innovation with an incredibly fast diffusion rate due to network effects. Notwithstanding, in many cases, they match the definition of resistant innovations, requiring a significant change in the consumers' behavior that may slow down the process of diffusion. How can network effects be leveraged to disseminate resistant innovation based on a platform structure?
Design/methodology/approach
This research focuses on the car-sharing industry as a single case study, involving five different providers and two service aggregators operating in Milan, Italy.
Findings
First, this research shows how direct network externalities on the providers' side may play a vital role in the dissemination process, increasing the value perceived by the potential new entrants. Second, it shows how co-opetition dynamics, eventually encouraging multihoming phenomenon, may play – in the first phases of the diffusion process – a pivotal role to let the industry flourish.
Research limitations/implications
This research contributes to the growing literature on platforms and two-sided platform showing how this model may be applied more broadly to network businesses to understand competitive dynamics.
Practical implications
This study offers insights to managers and practitioners dealing with network services, showing the potential benefits of coopetitive strategies while facing the initial phases of the dissemination process.
Originality/value
This paper gets together resistant innovation, two-sided platforms and network effects offering novel insights on the dynamics of network services – such as the car-sharing – while giving fresh insights taking the perspective of the service providers.

Abstract
A study by the National Transportation Safety Board showed that postcrash fires occurred in approximately 8.0 per cent of the 22,002 general aviation accidents during 1974–1978. About 59 per cent of the accidents involving postcrash fire resulted in fatalities, while fatalities were involved in only 13.3 per cent of those accidents without fire. A survey of state‐of‐the‐art technology has demonstrated that feasible techniques for the containment dramatically reduces fire injuries and deaths. The study has shown that there are few regulations dealing with the postcrash fire problem in general aviation aircraft. The Safety Board has made six recommendations to the Federal Aviation Administration for corrective action.

Abstract
WEAR is one of the major ways by which a material part ceases to be useful, others are corrosion, obsolescence and breakage. It is the consequence of relative motion and in industrial plant and equipment it has always been accepted as inevitable that it should lead to heavy expenditure for maintenance and replacement. Historically, wear is a well established fact, yet our knowledge of the technology is extremely limited. It has become a way of life that we compensate for wear when it no longer can be tolerated, yet need this be so? This article examines the problem, and primarily from the unlubricated point of view, describes the various types of wear and the way material selection or modification can be used to limit wear.

Abstract
Bases its findings on the results of a survey of 168 top level managers in French organizations. Demographic variables, behavioural characteristics and measures of business impact have been linked in order to discover whether organizational infrastructure concerns, educational achievements of top management, or the behaviour of top management, or a combination of these, influence the business performance of French private sector organizations. The results show that the level of qualification attained does not indicate whether French senior managers will perform effectively, nor is the configuration of organization structure significant for effective management. Crucial, however, are the attitudes and behaviour of senior managers, who are identified as significantly impacting on group and organizational performance. Considers that four areas of management development are pertinent to the continued growth and development of French senior managers, namely enhancing the ability to respond positively to feedback, enhancing interfacing skills, effective use of consultants and assisting managers to be high achievers.
