Abstract

This is the third of a series of studies on Chinese brand naming using content analysis from a linguistic perspective. The first study generalized the principles guiding Chinese brands in terms of syllable pattern, tone pattern, compounding structure and semantic preference. The second looked at specific branding rules, focusing on two entirely different products: cosmetic products and bicycles. The present study, following the same linguistic framework of analysis, analyzes three groups of closely related products: spirits, beers, soft drinks, to see how these brands are creatively and distinctively constructed. Finds that the brand naming patterns of the three drinks are basically in agreement with the general Chinese branding principles, and the differences among them directly reflect the development, the consumer markets and characteristics of each product.

Abstract

Reports a study of 1,304 Chinese brand names of ten types of products in China. These brand names are content analyzed following a linguistic approach which the authors developed from their earlier studies. The ten types of brand names are presented in three broad categories representing the three different developing stages of the consumer product industry in China: brands of traditional products (illustrated by matches and spirits), brands of traditional products with current development (illustrated by bicycles, shoes, and toothpastes), and brands of new and modern products (illustrated by cosmetics, soft drinks, washing machines, refrigerators and TV sets). The conclusion drawn from the analysis is that one of the variables in determining how linguistic principles are being applied to Chinese brand naming is the respective stages of development of such products in the context of the Chinese market economy.

Abstract

Brand names contribute to product success. Studies on brand naming have been mainly conducted in western countries with western European languages and few researchers have focused on how cultural and linguistic diversity is related to brand naming. Attempts to fill the gap by investigating the linguistic content of brand names in the People’s Republic of China. Analyses over 500 brand names of Chinese award‐winning products. Generalizes the characteristics of Chinese brand naming and identifies the preferred syllabic, tonic, semantic and morphological structures. Aims to provide guidance to local marketers to generate a good Chinese brand name in their culture and international marketers to properly localize an international brand in Chinese words in order to enhance business success in the Chinese market.

Abstract

Reports the benefits of using extensible markup language (XML) to support knowledge management of financial information. Current search engines cannot provide sufficient performance to support users of financial information, which includes both non‐structured items and well‐structured items. For investors, making a high‐quality decision sometimes requires both. XML can help by providing tags to create structure. XML provides a vendor‐neutral approach. XML authors can create arbitrary tags to describe the format or structure of data, and are not restricted to the tags in the specification for HTML. A prototype XML‐based Electronic Financial Filing System (ELFFS‐XML) has been developed to illustrate how to apply XML to model and add value to traditional HTML‐based financial information by cross‐linking related information from different data sources. Compares the functionality of XML‐based ELFFS with the original HTML‐based ELFFS and SEDAR, an electronic filing system used in Canada, and recommends some directions for future development of similar electronic filing systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to map out the connection between paradiplomacy, policy instruments and soft power and propose a theoretical framework for consideration.

Design/methodology/approach

This research adopted a qualitative research approach involving in-depth interviews with government officials from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices and two Hong Kong film directors.

Findings

The research has discovered that the government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) lacks a holistic strategy and policy to boost Hong Kong’s visibility in the global context. The HKSAR Government exhibits an incomplete understanding of the concept of soft power and ignores the values cherished in the civil society.

Practical implications

This investigation provides a background against which Hong Kong’s policymakers could devise a paradiplomatic strategy. This study suggests that political and social actors in Hong Kong must help to strengthen the city’s global position through strategic investments and the deployment of its soft power at home and aboard. The paradiplomacy of Hong Kong can serve as one of the effective tools to improve the legitimacy of “One Country, Two Systems.”

Originality/value

There is no study on the application of soft power under the framework of paradiplomacy. This paper represents a new direction of research in the area of Hong Kong, international status and its external affairs.

Abstract

Purpose

The internationalization of Chinese firms has been gaining importance in recent years. Informed by Dunning's eclectic paradigm, this paper examines the factors leading to the “going international” decisions of Chinese firms in the very early days of the “go global” call, before the central government offered substantial support.

Design/methodology/approach

It is suggested that two types of organizational factors are relevant to these decisions: the firm's management capability and core competencies. A survey of data of chief executives from over 3,000 firms in the year 2000 was analyzed.

Findings

Empirical results indicate that different resources endowments have different relationships with internationalization decisions. The intention of going international is affected by organizational competencies of R&D and manufacturing. Two capabilities (production and sales, and operation and finance) have significant impacts on outward direct investment, while manufacturing and marketing competencies have positive effects on exports, together with production capability. In addition, manufacturing competencies also have a negative effect on the acquisition and use of international capital.

Originality/value

By using firm‐level data collected in China, a better understanding of the nature of internationalization and the foreign direct investment characteristics of firms has been obtained. The empirical results show that the impacts of the organizational resources are different for different internationalization decisions, and the effects of core competencies of a firm vary across different paths of internationalization.

Abstract

This study examines the factors affecting joint venture employees’ affective commitment in the Peoples’ Republic of China. Three theoretical frameworks (i.e. the justice framework, the job security framework and the trust framework) are employed to study the antecedents and the consequence of workers’ affective commitment. The proposed mediation model includes: distributive justice, procedural justice and perceived job security as the antecedents of affective commitment; trust in organization as the mediator; and turnover intention as the outcome variable. The results supported this mediation model. It has been found that trust in organization mediates the relationships between distributive justice, procedural justice, perceived job security and affective commitment. In addition, perceived job security and affective commitment have significant effects on the turnover intention of workers. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of the present study are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce structured light image processing technology into pipeline welding automation projects, and develop a vision‐based pipeline girth‐welding robot. The welding torch can accurately track the weld and complete the omni‐orientation welding automatically.

Design/methodology/approach

Weld image processing adopts the base theory including Laplacian of Gaussian filter, neighbourhood mean filter, largest variance threshold segmentation and morphologic, etc. obtains good effect of weld recognition.

Findings

The paper uses a vision sensor to achieve the weld character's recognition and extraction, directly control the robot tracking weld to complete automation welding. Compared with the existing pipeline welding devices, it does not need the lay orbit or plot tracking mark, which can shorten the assistant time to improve the productivity.

Practical implications

The research findings can satisfy the need of whole‐directional automation welding for large diameter transportation pipe's circular abutting weld. It fits for the automation welding for the long‐distance transportation pipe of petroleum, natural gas, and water.

Originality/value

Aiming at the character recognition and extract of V‐type weld, the method combining the neighbourhood mean filter algorithm with the largest variance threshold segmentation is proposed to obtain the quick weld image processing speed.

Abstract

Technology innovation capability is a main driver in improving a country’s industrial competitiveness. Development prospects and development speed are strongly dependent on industry innovation capability. Therefore, how to effectively and correctly evaluate the innovation capability of industry is of great importance. On the basis of previous research, this paper establishes an index system for evaluating the technology innovation capability of China’s high-tech industries. The index is characterized by the objective evaluation of objects with measurable indexes. The fuzzy Borda method uses precise digital methods to handle fuzzy evaluation objects; therefore, more scientific and pragmatic quantitative criteria are obtained with qualitative and quantitative evaluation results. This paper is the first attempt to apply the fuzzy Borda combination method to high-tech industry innovation capability evaluation. We establish a fuzzy Borda combination model based on four kinds of single evaluation models. By making a combination evaluation, the disadvantages of a single evaluation method are avoided. In the end, based on the fuzzy Borda combination evaluation model, the real technology innovation data of 2013 is analyzed and the innovation capability of individual industry is ranked, which will provide useful guidance for decision-making administrators.

Extensive atomistic simulations of the mechanical deformation of defective nanowires (NWs) were performed using the embedded-atom molecular dynamics modeling approach. The investigation focuses on the coupled effects of various vacancy cluster (VC) defects, operation temperature, and wire cross-sectional area on the mechanical properties and plastic deformations of defective NWs. The stress-strain behaviors show that the elastic modulus is independent of the vacancy cluster defects. Quasi-linear decreasing Young's moduli were observed with increasing operation temperature. For a given operation temperature, NW Young's modulus increased with increasing NW size.
