Abstract
Today it is more important than ever to get a “pay‐off” from management training and development in terms of improved organisational performance. An initiative in W.H. Smith is described which focuses on helping managers improve performance and learn in so doing. The key issues facing organisations today, the need for a culture that releases enterprise and initiative, and the key part that a more supportive and empowering leadership has to play, are discussed. It is shown how the authors developed a programme to address these issues, help managers change their leadership behaviour and start to change the culture of their organisations. A programme is discussed which recognises that each manager is different and learns more if he or she is in charge of deciding and meeting his or her needs. How it worked in practice; what they learned; the effect it is having; and how it is evolving are examined.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide experienced insights to help entrepreneurs to maximise organisational change and achieve long term business growth and success.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper is based on personal experience ‐ as a mentor/coach for over 15 years ‐ working directly with entrepreneurs who are looking to make breakthroughs with their business or for themselves as individuals.
Findings
Because so many businesses fail, the impact of the entrepreneur ‐ the business leader ‐ is critical. The transition from entrepreneurial control to business management is crucial and if not well handled can result in missed opportunities, failure or even sabotage.
Originality/value
The paper will interest entrepreneurs and SMEs, but is also targeted at larger organisations which invest in organisational change. The paper emphasises the key link between leadership, personal development and business growth.

Abstract
Once more Christmas has come and gone and we are swinging away into the future under the auspices of the New Year 1915. Surely so dark, so dreadful a festive season cannot be recalled by any of us. Yet the unity of our peoples, the good comradeship of all classes of the community, the glad surrender of personal service and goods for the common weal, have given us heart to go forward, believing with stronger confidence than ever in the righteousness of our cause, and welding together of the various parts of our Dominions into an United Empire.
