Abstract

Many medium‐size companies in the UK fail to link their education, training and development policies to their business plan, according to a survey from Coopers & Lybrand. Examines the details of the survey. Concludes that education, training and development require the injection of money, planning and evaluation, just like any other capital investment.

Abstract

At the levels of both the national economy and organisations, learning is linked to competitiveness and it is frequently promoted as an all‐encompassing solution to the multiplicity of issues that organisations (and societies) face. This view, however, does not fully address how learning takes place and what the relationship may be between learning, education, training and development, which are frequently treated as isolated processes. Provides a re‐conceptualisation of these relationships by proposing a holographic perspective that can support their interaction while drawing closer the connections between individual, organisational and governmental practices. The main implications of the holographic perspective and its practical ramifications, particularly for the SME sector, are discussed at the end of the paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the ways in which learning is contextualised among the intersecting worlds of education, training and work.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study methodology is used.

Findings

It was found that contextualised learning is integral to industry‐school transition strategies in senior secondary school learning. However, its operational complexities are yet to be articulated in terms of senior secondary students as learners and earners – educational leadership in partnerships for future innovations in curriculum and pedagogy.

Research limitations/implications

Initial analysis of first stage fieldwork data is reported.

Originality/value

The paper is the first of a series that will report on findings from a three‐year research project (2007‐2010). Its originality stems from conceptualising “contextualised learning” (CL) for the development of individual capabilities through multi‐directional and reciprocal boundary crossing among education, training and work systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a personal perspective, of a contributor and Guest Editor, on the impact of Education + Training on promoting quality research and dissemination in the area of vocational education and training (VET) in small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs). It has been written specifically to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the publication of Education + Training.

Design/methodology/approach

The author adopts a reflective approach to evaluate critically the progression of this topic in terms of individual articles and Special Issues published since 1997, and reviews his close involvement with this journal.

Findings

This journal is widely recognised as a leader in its field. In terms of VET in SMEs, Education + Training has made a significant impact upon academic research and dissemination and contributed to emergent policy making in the UK and elsewhere.

Originality/value

This paper provides a succinct point of view on the impact and development of an academic journal. Its originality stems from the unique perspective offered by a contributor who, since 2000, also guest edited an annual double Special Issue on topics related to VET in SMEs.

2079

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review recent published research on entrepreneurship education (EE) specifically within the special issue collections of the journal Education +Training, and to assess the overall contribution to the field. The research questions focus on: What topics are explored by these SI papers? What trends can be observed in relation to country context and methodological approach? How is EE defined in these papers, and how do the papers contribute to the wider entrepreneurship research agenda?

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses an adapted version of the systematic literature review approach, focusing on the discrete special issues on entrepreneurship/enterprise education published in the journal Education + Training since 2010. A comprehensive reading guide was used to review the papers, with completed data compiled into a single excel spreadsheet to facilitate analysis. A total of 66 papers were reviewed.

Findings

A considerable range of themes, geographical contexts and methodological approaches were used in the papers reviewed. A mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches were also found. The papers were characterised by a strong international and applied dimension, with the core collective contribution of the SI papers laying in their direct relevance to practice.

Research limitations/implications

The paper is limited by its deliberate focus on a discrete set of special issue papers; however, the total of 66 papers included in the review is noteworthy.

Practical implications

The paper demonstrates the considerable learning that can be garnered from the Education + Training special issue collection for EE practitioners.

Originality/value

To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time this discrete collection of special issue papers has been reviewed.

Abstract

Michael Kami, president of Corporate Planning Inc., recently said that “the success of an organization depends on the individual and collective knowledge of its people”. This is very true, and highlights the importance of staying ahead in your particular field. The difficulties lie in deciding how to stay ahead. What strategies should be used, where it should be done and how much it will cost, are just a few of the issues that need to be addressed before tackling the knowledge debate.

Abstract

In late 1977 the British Library Research and Development Department funded visits I made to twelve organizations using computers for their bibliographic information requirements. I visited Norway, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and Britain. This paper discusses some of the general aspects of education, training and marketing techniques for online searching and describes the methods adopted by some of the organizations visited.
