Abstract

Purpose

The paper examines why leadership development needs to pay more attention to business acumen.

Design/methodology/approach

The article reveals why traditional leadership‐development approaches, which rely on personality and competency assessments as the scientific core of their approach, are failing. It also highlights how powerful global economic trends such as the economic slowdown, shortages of key commodities, emerging countries that have little or no familiarity with traditional leadership approaches, and environmental cost‐benefit issues are also converging to increase the importance of business acumen in leadership‐development approaches.

Findings

The author contends that research in the area of business acumen will have an increasing impact on the leadership‐development and HR agendas.

Practical implications

The paper demonstrates that leadership‐development, organizational‐development and HR specialists will need rapidly to absorb these new findings and to incorporate them into their leadership development and their executive‐selection and recruitment programs.

Originality/value

The article provides a convincing case for business acumen to play a more significant role in leadership development.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to focus on the personal financial traits of individuals and shows how they directly affect the financial performance and valuation of an organization.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents an approach to management and leadership that is very bottom‐line oriented and focused on organizational value creation.

Findings

The paper finds that we all have traits that lead us to make financial decisions in a particular way. Once we understand that particular way, or “financial signature”, we can predict how a particular executive, or individual, will make financial decisions. This, in turn, allows us to predict the financial performance of that executive, or executive team.

Originality/value

The paper recognizes that many executives, who would not rank highly on traditional personality and competency‐based leadership ratings, are often highly successful leaders who create outstanding products, profitability and value for their shareholders.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reveal a new contribution to behavioural finance that focuses on individuals rather than groups.

Design/methodology/approach

Research is based on field studies with executives utilizing an assessment instrument to identify and measure their financial traits. The approach to the topic is to present the underlying model of financial traits and show how they add another dimension to behavioural finance approaches.

Findings

The model identifies three financial styles, each of which comprises three financial signatures. Each of the financial signatures leads to characteristic financial decisions with specific valuation outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

The research is in its early stages. It requires larger sample sizes and needs to be conducted across industries and different cultures. Its implications are that can be predicted the financial performance and valuation of companies by knowing the financial styles of their leaders and managers, and also their financial cultures.

Practical implications

Practical implications are that this work can be used as a new method for valuing companies, for stock analysis and for portfolio analysis and valuation. It can also be used as a basis for M&A, to assess the financial alignment of companies conducting M&A and the likely chances of success.

Originality/value

The paper shows a totally new way to assess the valuation outcomes of individuals, teams and companies based purely on their behavioural financial traits.

Abstract

Man has been seeking an ideal existence for a very long time. In this existence, justice, love, and peace are no longer words, but actual experiences. How ever, with the American preemptive invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq and the subsequent prisoner abuse, such an existence seems to be farther and farther away from reality. The purpose of this work is to stop this dangerous trend by promoting justice, love, and peace through a change of the paradigm that is inconsistent with justice, love, and peace. The strong paradigm that created the strong nation like the U.S. and the strong man like George W. Bush have been the culprit, rather than the contributor, of the above three universal ideals. Thus, rather than justice, love, and peace, the strong paradigm resulted in in justice, hatred, and violence. In order to remove these three and related evils, what the world needs in the beginning of the third millenium is the weak paradigm. Through the acceptance of the latter paradigm, the golden mean or middle paradigm can be formulated, which is a synergy of the weak and the strong paradigm. In order to understand properly the meaning of these paradigms, however, some digression appears necessary.

Abstract

Machiavelli's dictums in The Prince (1977) instigated the modern discourse on power. Arguing that “there's such a difference between the way we really live and the way we ought to live that the man who neglects the real to study the ideal will learn to accomplish his ruin, not his salvation” (Machiavelli, 1977, p. 44), his approach is a realist one. In this text, Machiavelli (1977, p. 3) endeavors to “discuss the rule of princes” and to “lay down principles for them.” Taking his lead, Foucault (1978, p. 97) argued that “if it is true that Machiavelli was among the few…who conceived the power of the Prince in terms of force relationships, perhaps we need to go one step further, do without the persona of the Prince, and decipher mechanisms on the basis of a strategy that is immanent in force relationships.” He believed that we should “investigate…how mechanisms of power have been able to function…how these mechanisms…have begun to become economically advantageous and politically useful…in a given context for specific reasons,” and, therefore, “we should…base our analysis of power on the study of the techniques and tactics of domination” (Foucault, 1980, pp. 100–102). Conceptualizing such techniques and tactics as the “art of governance”, Foucault (1991), examined power as strategies geared toward managing civic populations through shaping people's dispositions and behaviors.
