Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the impact of government financial assistance provided to Australian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses firm-level panel data on more than 2,000 SMEs over a five-year period from the Business Longitudinal Database compiled by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The authors measure the impact of government financial assistance in terms of subsequent SME performance (income from sales of goods and services and profitability) and changes in the availability of alternative nongovernment finance.

Findings

The authors find government financial assistance helps SMEs improve performance over and above the effects of conventional financing. They also find than the implicit guarantee effect signalled by a firm receiving government financial assistance suggests firms are more likely to obtain nongovernment finance in the future. Control factors that significantly affect SME performance and finance availability include business size, the level of innovation, business objectives and industry.

Research limitations/implications

Nearly all of the responses in the original survey data are qualitative, so we are unable to assess how the strength of these relationships varies by the levels of assistance, income and profitability. The measure of government financial assistance of the authors is also general in that it includes grants, subsidies and rebates from any Australian Government organisation, so we are unable to comment on the impact of individual federal, state or local government programmes.

Practical implications

Government financial assistance helps SMEs improve both immediate and future performance as measured by income and profitability. This could be because government financial assistance quickly overcomes the financial constraints endemic in SMEs. Government financial assistance also helps SMEs obtain nongovernment finance in the future. The authors conjecture that this is because it overcomes some of the information opaqueness of SMEs.

Originality/value

Few studies focus on the impact of direct government financial assistance compared with indirect assistance as typical in credit guarantee schemes. The authors use a very large and detailed data set on Australian SMEs to undertake the analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the effects of different uncertainties on Internet stock trading (IST) adoption intentions of individual investors in China and aims to determine the interaction effects of trust and perceived benefits in the relationship between uncertainty dimensions and IST adoption intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a structured questionnaire, a survey of 353 experienced stock traders was conducted in China. The proposed uncertainty-trust-perceived benefits framework was examined through structural equation modelling using Smart PLS 3.0.

Findings

The study found significant negative effects of perceived technology uncertainty, perceived regulatory uncertainty and perceived information asymmetry on the IST adoption intentions of individual investors. Perceived service intangibility was found to have only insignificant effects on IST adoption intentions. In terms of interaction results, trust significantly moderates the relationship between IST adoption intentions and, respectively, perceived technology uncertainty and perceived information asymmetry. Similarly, perceived benefits significantly moderate the relationship between intentions to adopt IST and both perceived technology uncertainty and perceived regulatory uncertainty.

Practical implications

The regulators for IST development in China could utilise the results of this study as guidelines for strategies to increase the use of IST among existing and potential investors.

Originality/value

Using social cognitive theory, this research investigates the effects of various uncertainties on IST adoption intentions of individual investors in China; these effects have not been explored by previous literature. Furthermore, few studies other than this one have investigated the interaction effects of factors which counteract the negative effect of other factors.

Purpose

In order to research the law of the low‐frequency power oscillation which often exists in the synchronous generator rectification system, the purpose of this paper is to study theoretical analysis and numerical calculation on the static stability of the system.

Design/methodology/approach

Different from the common three‐phase synchronous generator operating in large power networks, the stability of synchronous generator rectification systems is much more difficult to analyze because of its nonlinear loads. Some papers have analyzed the stability of the synchronous generator rectification system and presented different parameter conditions of system stability, but since factors that influence the system stability are complex, the essence of this kind of oscillation is not completely known yet. By considering rectification systems as an equivalent to DC circuits, the correct circuit model which is necessary to analyze the rectification systemic stability is set up, the changing law and relationship of various parameters under mini‐disturbances is analyzed, a linear differential equation about the DC‐side average current is derived, the stability of the synchronous generator rectification system is analyzed and deduced by using Hull criterion, all parameters influencing system stability are calculated and analyzed, and their ranges for a stable rectification system are given. Also, the reason why and how the parameters affect system stability is explained.

Findings

The operational stability of synchronous generator rectification systems is completely and correctly recognized.

Practical implications

The paper has a reference value for the design and safe operation of synchronous generator rectification systems.

Originality/value

The paper puts forward system stability criterion and gives a rational physical explanation about system stability.

The purpose of this paper is to review the fundamental methodology and its development of intelligent disassembly planning research.

Design/methodology/approach

Following a brief introduction, this paper first discusses the fundamental problems associated with disassembly planning and analysis. And then considers the role of intelligent optimization methods in the disassembly planning field. This is followed by a summary and conclusion.

Findings

Many advances have been made in computerized intelligent disassembly planning research, which is a natural evolutionary result of both traditional solving methodology and much research effort over past two decades. But as yet, some fundamental limitations are also rooted in this computational model‐based methodology.

Originality/value

The paper provides a fundamental review on the development of computerized intelligent disassembly planning research.

Abstract

Purpose

The wind speed is very fluctuant and contains a significant energy. Taking into account the turbulent component in the energy management would increase the profitability of the wind‐diesel hybrid system. Sometimes, a diesel generator is used to compensate the requested energy but the storage devices are required to prevent disturbances induced by the wind generator current on the DCbus. The purpose of this paper is to show how the battery and flywheel (or ultracapacitors (UCs)) are used to mitigate the fluctuations of the wind generator current. The proposed method is based on the filtering of the wind generator current. The high power density sources (flywheel and UCs) are used in aims to improve the batteries' lifetime, which is estimated, in this paper, by using the rainflow cycles counting method. Spectral studies are made and the simulation and experimental results are analyzed.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is organized according to the following main and sub‐topics: wind speed characteristics, hybrid system energy management, behavioral simulations results, spectral analysis and batteries' lifetime estimation and experimental setup and results.

Findings

The simulations results highlight the interest in using a second‐order filter. The experimental results show that the fluctuations induced by the wind generator current are effectively mitigated by the storage devices.

Originality/value

The spectral analysis of the current for different filters parameters is realized and the application of the rainflow cycles counting method, in this context, is presented. This paper is interesting for the experimental hybrid system design according to the method proposed to control the DCDC converters.

Abstract

Purpose

Model finance-seeking behaviour and outcomes by Australian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) using firm-level panel data. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

Using firm-level three-year panel data for more than 2,000 SMEs from the Business Longitudinal Database compiled by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the authors estimate separate models for the seeking of finance (debt and/or equity) and the outcomes of finance seeking (successful or unsuccessful). Key explanatory variables include declared business focus (on financial, cost, operational, quality, innovation, and human resource measures), presence of business plans and other documentation related to successful finance seeking, innovation, indicators for family and foreign-owned businesses, and profitability. Control variables include sales, the number of employees, length of operations, export and import activity, government financial assistance, and industry classification.

Findings

Business objectives together with a large number of firm-level characteristics, including firm age, size, industry and sales, profits, growth and exports, significantly affect both finance-seeking behaviour and outcomes. The authors find evidence that the pecking-order and agency cost theories of capital structure at least partly explain the financial behaviour of Australian SMEs.

Research limitations/implications

Several of the responses in the underlying survey data are qualitative so the authors are unable to assess how the strength of these relationships varies by the levels of sales and profitability.

Practical implications

The findings show that business objectives significantly affect SME finance-seeking decisions and outcomes. SMEs that focus on profitability or growth have a strong willingness to seek additional finance; in comparison, SMEs that focus on the quality of their products or services are less likely to apply for additional finance. As only half of the SMEs in the sample considered profitability or growth to be a major business focus, core business objectives greatly affect SME financing decisions. Further, pecking-order theory not trade-off theory better explains the financial behaviour of SMEs, yielding evidence that SMEs continue to face financial constraints when pursuing growth. Some evidence also of agency cost theory in the positive effects of family ownership on debt seeking.

Originality/value

One of very few studies to examine finance seeking by SMEs, especially in Australia. Further, only study known to include declared business strategy, presence of business plans and other finance-related documentation and innovation in addition to the usual focus on growth and profitability to explain financing behaviour. Very large panel of longitudinal data used to explain financial decision making over time.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to establish a three-dimensional flow field model of the Invar alloy laser–metal inert gas (laser–MIG) hybrid welding process to investigate the influence of different heat sources between different layers and to analyze the flow field based on the two different heat source models for the multilayer welding.

Design/methodology/approach

The Invar steel plates with 19.5 mm thickness are welded into three layers’ seam using the hybrid laser–MIG welding technology. The flow field based on different heat source models is studied and then used to investigate the influence of different heat sources in different layers during the laser–MIG hybrid welding process. The simulation results of flow field using two different heat source models are compared with experiments.

Findings

The flow field simulations results show that using the Gaussian rotating body heat source model to simulate the temperature field is more consistent with the experiment of the hybrid laser–MIG welding where its flow field between different layers better reflects the characteristics of the hybrid laser–MIG welding.

Originality/value

The findings will be useful in the study of a variety of thick-plate laser–MIG hybrid welding process fluid flows.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a new approach for simulating the ion flow field with the floating conductors based on the existing inversion method.

Design/methodology/approach

The space charge keeps charging the floating conductors until the dynamic balance is reached. The corresponding floating potential boundary condition is linearized as the combination of the equipotential constraints and natural boundary condition, which can be directly imposed in the inversion process.

Findings

The numerical results demonstrate that the modified inversion algorithm performs well in the ion flow field with the floating conductors and the floating potential converges within five steps’ iterations. The proposed approach is applied to investigate the effect of the grounded line to the floating conductors in the practical high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines.

Originality/value

The modified inverse algorithm provides a general way to deal with the Kapzov hypothesis and the floating boundary condition simultaneously within one loop, which can be applied to the multiphysics systems with different kinds of irregular boundary conditions.
