Abstract

OCLC has always been a farsighted institution. Only ten years after its successful North American venture in providing online cataloging support to Ohio libraries (more than ten years before the official introduction of the European Economic Community), OCLC opened an office in the United Kingdom. Its success has been nothing less than explosive.

Abstract

Despite it being a central focus of government policy, there is a lack of research into the experience of employment for people with mental health problems, especially with regard to the social outcomes. David Buckle uses evidence from research and the findings of his own qualitative study to explore the relationship between supported employment and social inclusion and argues that the social and psychological needs of people with mental ill health can potentially be met by putting employment at the heart of mental health services.

Abstract

OCLC recently celebrated its first decade in Europe. On January 1, 1981, OCLC opened its Europe branch in Birmingham, England, with three staff members; an office in the home of its managing director; no network to connect it to its corporate headquarters, systems center, and bibliographic database; and no library users.

Abstract

The intention of this paper is to describe the mechanisms by which bibliographic data may be commonly created and utilised by an international library community. The paper is partisan in that it describes the mechanism developed by a particular ‘not for profit’ vendor of library services: OCLC Incorporated.

Abstract

The old year has gone, leaving its trail of never‐to‐be‐forgotten memories of strife and turbulence, calamity, disaster, and a huge burden of worries for us to face in the New Year. Few if any will not be deeply grateful to see the passing of 1985. Except for the periods of calm there cannot be a year within living memory to equal it in terms of violence, unparalleled in times of “peace”, collosal in terms of soaring social and public expenditure and financial loss, and in disasters in the world beyond the shores of these islands. It would not be an exaggeration to state that the enormous indebtedness which the year has heaped upon the people will never be wiped off, and it has got to be done mainly by those innocent of any misconduct, and their descendants. The unprecedented scale of street and community violence, the looting, thieving and general crime committed behind the screen of it.

Abstract

Circulation In the main library the university has installed a Plessey Satellite system for circulation control of normal loan stock, operating in batch mode and recording the data direct onto ½ inch magnetic tape. The transactions for the previous day are processed every morning, the library not having secure access to sufficient computer time to make online operation a feasible proposition. At the moment, for the great majority of items held by the library there is no bibliographic record available to the circulation system, though this is gradually being remedied and it is intended to use the mag. tape as part of the LOCAS service (see below) to build up automatically a short‐title file of all additions to stock.
