On the only rainy day of a week in early March, a yellow Rolls Royce pulled up outside a substantial house in North London, the home of Dr Paul Eisler, the inventor of the foil method of printed circuit manufacture. The occasion was the presentation to him of the Graphic Electronics Achievement Award in recognition of his work on the printed circuit.

PCIF 1989 annual conference, Dates: 20–21 September 1989

With this year's Symposium returning to this popular Thames‐side location, the venue, catering and general arrangements were much appreciated and commented upon by delegates attending the event. Regrettably, numbers were low—attributable partly to a clash of dates with other PCB industry activities.

This two‐week course held in May 1987 at Oxford University Department for External Studies comprised an interesting and comprehensive programme of instructive lecture sessions combined with company visits which gave attendees the opportunity to observe practical aspects of several areas of the course. Examination results are printed below, and details of the course contents are as follows:

Indian Summer conditions prevailed in the pleasant Thames‐side setting as some 100 delegates convened at the Runnymede Hotel, Egham, on 20–21 September for the 1989 PCIF Conference. An advance glance at the programme suggested an interesting two days' activities. In reality, expectations were, if anything, surpassed and the general consensus was that the event provided an excellent variety of useful presentations, mainly on non‐technical themes. Incorporating business issues, training, exporting, the COSHH regulations, etc., it addressed relevant areas often underemphasised or ignored in the conference agenda. Interaction between delegates and speakers reached an all‐time high, with much constructive debate ensuing, and the inclusion of a number of panel sessions proved popular and successful. Let us hope that the organisers use the same recipe for the 1990 Conference.

Over the past year in particular, ICT courses have been going from strength to strength, with ever increasing attendance and interest in the topical subject areas offered.

The Second Brazilian Printed Circuit Association Seminar will take place in Rio de Janeiro from 21–23 September 1988. Papers will be presented on the following topics:

The members of the chapter at the annual meeting held on 27 November 1992 in Brno decided not to split after the separation of Czechoslovakia. It was suggested to organise a larger chapter from the Central European States to provide greater co‐operation and better functioning of the smaller chapters. A new name for the chapter was proposed — Central European Chapter (CEC) — to express neutrality and to point out that the chapter is open to other neighbouring chapters and to new members from the states where no national chapter yet exists.

Since its advent in 1983, Circuit Technology has gone from strength to strength, as indicated by visitor attendance which increased from 3000 in 1983 to over 6000 in 1984. Predictions are that, with the larger venue at Olympia's National Hall, previous attendance figures will be exceeded many times at Circuit Technology '85.

Now formed for almost two years, the Brazilian Printed Circuit Association, ABRACI (Associação Brasileira de Circuitos Impressos), held on 17–18 September 1987 at Curitiba its first seminar on printed circuit technology. The association, with 150 members, is going from strength to strength and the 1987 Seminar was attended by 250 persons from several states. Participants included representatives from well known international companies (Du Pont, Degussa, IBM, Unisys, etc.), Government, Universities and local companies. The programme of 16 papers was divided into four sessions: Market, Quality, Manufacturing and SMT. The two‐day event proved too short for the enthusiasm of participants.
